The conception of development is a theme in constant reflection and topicality. It has been investigated by different schools of thought and questioned from various angles, mainly in economic studies. The purpose of the article is to synthetically analyze the evolution of the concept of development in order to understand the complexity and the diverse factors that influence it, the new vision focused on the applications of human capacities and, together with it, the way of measuring the development known by the Human Development Index (HDI). It is important to note that at the present time, to refer to development in its most comprehensive concept, the term socioeconomic development is used, which covers all dimensions from the perspective: economic, social, demographic and environmental.
