This article offers insight into the latest tendencies of university-company linkages and the role of governments as regulating bodies of the process. Hence, it aims to address the relationship as a transforming element of modern universities, both from the management approach and the new benefits offered by this triple interrelationship. Therefore, the bases to achieve the linkage and the opportunities that are achieved, the importance for the university, business and social areas are shown.

In addition, the article explains the favorable conditions for the linkages, the fundamental results and impacts that lead to the emergence of new concepts in industry and education, such as the so-called Industry 4.0 and Education 4.0. The results also reveal contributions to the teaching-learning process and to research as an inherent element to Research and Development (R&D) company projects and to social development. The strengths and benefits of this relationship are recognized by the different industries, which are now perceiving Higher Education Institutions as an indispensable link in their productive chain.
