The protection of the environment constitutes a great challenge for human survival and concerns all spheres of daily life. In this sense, environmental assessments contribute to making decisions based on documented evidence. This work aims to analyze the process of integrated assessment of the state of the environment in Cuba. The protection of the environment in Cuba is presented from public policies supported by science, technology and innovation and the need for an integrated environmental approach to be employed in evaluating the environment is highlighted, particularly at the local level, with the participation of all the actors of society. The role of higher education and the need to strengthen public administration and innovation in public policies at different levels are shown, as well as the need for an adequate articulation of Governance with science, technology and innovation in its local dimension, to promote environmental protection for the benefit of society.
