Abstract

TORRES AJA, Lidia  and  CABALLERO AJA, Neylín. Male Breast Cancer: a 36 year study. Behaviour in the Cienfuegos Province. Rev. Finlay [online]. 2016, vol.6, n.4, pp.274-280. ISSN 2221-2434.

Foundation: male breast cancer is considered as a medical rarity, because differently from the female one which is health problem worldwide, this one only represents 0.5 to 1 % of the total diagnosed breast cancers. Objective: to characterize the behaviour of male breast cancer in the Cienfuegos province. Method: 36 year descriptive cross section study from January 1st to December 31st 2015. The total of patients operated in this period were 19, representing the 100 %, they were intervened in the General Surgery Service of the General University Hospital Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima of Cienfuegos. The studied variables were: age, affected breast, anatomic location, histological type, biopsy modality used, clinical stage of tumours in the case of carcinomas, surgical technique applied in each patient and their evolution. A model for data collection was created and applied to each patient and clinical records and biopsy protocols were reviewed from the pathological anatomy department of the hospital. The information is shown in tables of number and percentages. Results: male breast cancer represented 0.8 % of the total of breast cancers operated during the studied period, in addition its detection in advanced clinical stages was corroborated. Conclusion: the increase of the incidence of this disease in the last decade in the Cienfuegos province, demands establishing mechanisms for its early detection.
