Abstract

Practical clinical guidelines constitute methodological tools at the health professionals’ hands, which are used with the purpose of improving the quality of the medical assistance, besides guarantying patients’ safety. After some more than two decades of its emergence it has been convenient to reassess its role in the medical practice, the methods for their elaboration and implementation, estimating their quality, the adherence that professionals make to them, their current advantages and disadvantages, their evolution in the complex current medical context, so as identifying new actions to promote their adequate usage. It is stated not to obviate new concepts, as people centered medicine, narrative and personalized medicine to try making them compatible with the guidelines usage. It is also emphasized that, only a harmonic equilibrium among updated knowledge, systematized and adequate to the profession art and ethics in patients caring, will always be the ideal combination of any medical performance.
