Currently, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection is highlighted among the known human diseases, because it has brought great problems to the world economy and social life, due to the increase in the mortality rate that was observed every day. Given the large increase in the number of infected people, as well as the cost of drugs and/or their adverse effects, there is an urgency to develop new strategies to seek affordable and effective antiviral drugs. Given the above, several studies use medicinal plants and their bioactive molecules with antiviral properties, as a possibility to develop therapeutic agents against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Thus, this review makes an overview of what is in the literature related to antiviral medicinal plants, with possible ethnobotanical evidence in correlation with coronavirus. It is concluded that this review will be useful for the reader to realize that there is a path taken in the area of Natural Products chemistry focused on seeking alternative and safe therapeutic means against SARS-CoV-2 infection.
