ALONSO-GELI, Yamirka et al. Characterization of osmotic fragility of human erythrocytes in chronic haemolytic anemia. Rev Cub Quim [online]. 2015, vol.27, n.2, pp.110-118. ISSN 2224-5421.
Since sickle cell diseases are characterized by chronic hemolyticanemia, this work aims to characterize the osmotic fragility of normal and sickled erythrocytes. We worked with blood samples of healthy individuals and sickle cell patients. We carry out the rapid osmotic fragility test. The results show that the minimum globular resistance was at 0,45 % NaCl and the maximum resistance was at 0,32 % NaCl. In sickle cell, resistance was at 0,36 % NaCl and the maximum globular resistance was at 0,1 % NaCl. By comparing the results for each type of cell, we obtain decrease of osmotic fragility of the sickle cells against normal cells, showing a shift of the curve towards lower values of % NaCl. We found statistically significant differences between the means of the percentage of hemolysis in hypotonic solutions between 0,1 % and 0,36 % NaCl (p < 0,05).
