TEJADA-TOVAR, Candelaria et al. Utilization of water hyacinth's (Eichhornia crassipes) for the synthesis of carboxymethylcellulose. Rev Cub Quim [online]. 2018, vol.30, n.2, pp.211-221. ISSN 2224-5421.

Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was synthesized from cellulose obtained from water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). Cellulose content between 24 and 27 % was found in stems and leaves, respectively. The cellulose was obtained by alkaline treatment with 6, 8 and 10 % w/v NaOH solutions. The amount of cellulose in the black liquor was proportional to the concentration of the solution. The obtained cellulose was characterized by FTIR infrared spectroscopy, which made possible to obtainits structural characterization. This synthesis of CMC was carried out with isopropanol, NaOH at 15 % w/v and monochloroacetic acid. The functional groups of this compound were identified in the FTIR of the synthesized CMC in the commercial and non commercial one. Water hyacinth ( Eichhornia crassipes ) is considered a good precursor to obtained CMC.
