MONTALVAN-ESTRADA, Adelmo et al. Pollution-purification processes in surface waters affected by the discharge of tannery effluents. Rev Cub Quim [online]. 2019, vol.31, n.1, pp. 65-80. ISSN 2224-5421.
It was made an evaluation of the impact of wastewaters discharged by a tannery, which has a gray water footprint of 5 194 m3/d, in the water quality of the receiving body. Four monitoring stations were established along the surface watercourse and samples were taken on a weekly basis, for three months. It was observed that approximately in the first three kilometers of the watercourse there is a strong decrease in the values for the great majority of the evaluated parameters, which is related to the predominance of the physical processes of sedimentation. The comparison with reference values in low-contaminated water bodies shows that the self-purification processes cannot restore the water quality that existed before the effluents were discharged: there is an increase in salinity and a decrease in dissolved oxygen.
