Resumen

MARRERO-AGUILA, Rigoberto  y  ZELAYA-REINA, Arturo Ramón. Evaluation of Corrosion Problems on Pipelines of an Hydroelectric Power Station. RTQ [online]. 2014, vol.34, n.1, pp.1-10. ISSN 2224-6185.

"Francisco Morazán" Power Station, since it started to work, had not been object of a general inspection into the internal side of pipelines system. Metallic parts of the installation, exposed to the atmosphere, have corrosion process evidences. A study of general corrosion problems is carried out to propose adequate solutions. During a general parade of the power station, measurement, assays and observations are made. Available information about waters and surroundings, and measurement and observations, are analyzed. Results are obtained about the corrosion possibility of pipelines on the internal side by water action, and on the external side, in contact with the surroundings. Waters classify as a very little incrusting and no corrosive, offering protection of steel against corrosion. These results were corroborated by direct observation. On the external side, clear corrosion signs were observed. Painting systems, although showed recommended thickness, were incapable of maintaining the corrosion protection of steel in the high humidity conditions and pollutant presence by a long period of time. Pipelines are not in imminent danger of perforation, but some rules should be considered in order to avoid future damages. A complete evaluation of painting systems should be carried out before using them, in order to make a correct selection of those paints able of offering adequate corrosion protection in exploitation conditions of the studied installation.

Palabras clave : hydroelectric; corrosion; saturation index; atmospheric corrosion; painting systems.
