Abstract

RUIZ GIL, Amado K; PENA RODRIGUEZ, Joan  and  REMON DIAZ, Dianys. Bovine Mastitis in Cuba. Review Article. Rev. prod. anim. [online]. 2016, vol.28, n.2-3, pp.39-50. ISSN 2224-7920.

Mastitis is the main disease affecting dairy cattle. One of the most important endeavors of Cuban cattle raising is to reduce the incidence of the disease; therefore it is important to study its antecedents in the country and the contributions made by researchers in this area. The literature shows that the frequency of mastitis caused by well-known pathogens has declined; whereas mastitis caused by minor pathogens is more frequent. Scientists recommend studying the incidence of mastitis in the east of Cuba, mastitis-related losses, antimicrobial sensitivity of studied microorganisms, and differences between mechanical and manual milking. Also, somatic cell counts must be extended to the whole country. Another recommendation is to improve the routine and hygiene when milking. In order to control mastitis, the production of medications should be increased; more research must be done on natural products and alternative treatments (homeopathy and Eucalyptus). Additionally, it would be useful to develop a program to control bovine mastitis based on recent research results in Cuba, including nationally-manufactured products, and using updated methodologies to fight the disease.

Keywords : bovine mastitis; prevalence; etiology; Cuba.
