Abstract

NAPOLES ABREU, Osvaldo et al. The agri-food chain with a focus on local development: the case of goat milk in Jimaguayú. Rev. prod. anim. [online]. 2024, vol.36, n.1, pp. 115-130.  Epub Apr 20, 2024. ISSN 2224-7920.

Background:

The determining role that goat dairying can play in addressing the economic, social and environmental challenges that attack the world's population, mainly in developing countries, is internationally recognized. In Cuba, it has been evident that the benefits of these productions are not taken advantage of.

Aim.

Characterize the goat milk agri-food chain in the municipality of Jimaguayú for its contribution to local development, based on the use of endogenous potential.

Materials and methods:

The study has a descriptive-explanatory nature. It is evident that the goat dairy has the potential to positively impact the social, economic and environmental dimensions of local development in Jimaguayú, for which management with a chain approach is required based on a methodology adjusted to the Cuban context.

Results:

The world herd of dairy goats registered in 2019 was 215 316.93 animals with a milk production equivalent to 19 910 379 tons in the year. The Asian continent with 50.82% of the world's dairy goat stock contributed with the highest milk production (58.67%).

Conclusions:

They offer information to contribute to decision-making on duly reasoned bases; in relation to the organization of production with a territorial focus and for the improvement of the Municipal Strategic Diagnosis as the base moment of the Municipal Strategic Planning.

Keywords : goat milk; agri-food chain; local development.
