The designing of distributed databases is an optimization problem that implies solving problems of data fragmentation and location. Usually, the criteria for determining if data location and fragmentation are optimal, are independently stated. Firstly, they search for the "best possible fragmentation" and then for their "best location". Vertical fragmentation is more difficult if compared with horizontal fragmentation due to the increasing of possible alternatives. In this work we present one new method for vertical fragmentation, mainly based on the called Attribute Attraction Matrix, replacing the well known Attribute Affinity Matrix. As heuristic approach we use the hierarchical clustering and one decision rule based on the internal homogeneity and the external heterogeneity of the obtained clusters. We also present a variant of this method for evaluating partitions.
