In this paper a historical summarization about the appearance in Cuba of theoretical and applied researches on Pattern Recognition is exposed, emphasizing the practical problems that were the motivation of the development of this line of researches in our country and the groups that faced this task at the beginning. The paper only considers the publications and some of the applications realized before 1996, although after this data the development of the discipline has being much more accelerated and productive.
