According to data on epidemiology of COVID-19, a higher risk for serious illness and death occurs in male, elderly patients or patients with comorbidities, which is explained by the effect of chromosomal and hormonal dimorphism on the immunological system. Objective: To expound physiological changes and social characteristics of women during middle age that contribute to including menopause among the factors related to evolution of COVID-19. Conclusions: the hormonal changes that occur in women during the climacteric in conjunction with gender-related factors justify the inclusion of menopause when stratifying the age to reduce the bias in the interpretation of the results by considering chronological age at this stage of life as a uniform variable.
