Introduction:

Bibliometric studies on cultural tourism and museums have been of interest to several authors. In the current stage, identified as creative cultural tourism, it is necessary to determine the new role that museums play in the conception of the tourist offer.

Objective:

To map the scientific production on cultural tourism and museums in Scopus in order to identify the current trends of these resources for tourism purposes.

Methods:

It was used the bibliometric method. It was carried out the search for the thematic descriptors “cultural tourism” and “museum” in scientific articles corresponding to the period (2018-2022), available in the Scopus database. The Biblioshiny application and the VOSviewer software were used to process the information.

Results:

They were found a total of 1,278 publications, which shows that the topic is of current interest. Timothy Jung is the author with the highest impact, China the most productive and cited country, Sustainability (Switzerland) the most productive journal and Tourism Management the most cited journal. They were identified two main thematic lines, the study of the cultural tourist and the use of new technologies to enrich the experience of tourists in museums.

Conclusions:

The study evokes the shift of museums towards creative tourism with the use of new technologies and a focus on social interactions. Future lines of research that should concern academics and researchers in the field of cultural tourism were identified.
