Resumen

PONCE REY, Liena de Regla et al. Potentialities of Sargassum biomass as a source of bioactive compounds in the global context of viral disease emergence. Anales de la ACC [online]. 2025, vol.15, n.1  Epub 01-Abr-2025. ISSN 2304-0106.

The current global epidemiological context places viral diseases as an objective risk to human and animal health. Most viral pathogens lack therapeutic or prophylactic treatments. The development of broad-spectrum antiviral molecules from natural sources represents an alternative solution to this challenge. Brown algae of the genus Sargassum possess diverse biological properties, but the study of their biomedical potential is a field yet to be explored. The present work identifies and addresses the sustainable use of excess Sargassum biomass as a strategy for the search and development of bioactive compounds as an alternative for the treatment of viral diseases. The above mentioned is more relevant considering the current epidemiological challenges, acting in coherence with the Cuban Science and Technology Policy and with the sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda.

Palabras clave : virus; Sargassum; antiviral; emerging diseases.
