The present situation of medical training both in Cuba and abroad is evaluated, considering each country's medical practice standards. The historic and logical method was used in the study to investigate the events and developments from its origin and evolution. The main techniques used were interviews to top management experts in medical training, and literature review of the main documents that make reference to the medical degree studies, internationally. The recent literature on primary health care as a teaching scenario was reviewed, highlighting the particular features of medical education in different areas of the world and Cuba. This paper provides new knowledge about necessary transformations in medical education for developing countries, and their distinctive features in relation to Cuba.
