Cuban health scientific production registered in Scopus and PubMed databases was broken down by source institution applying search strategies especially developed for this purpose. Determination was also made of whether contributions came from the health sector itself or other areas. Results were examined and identification was made of the source of each contribution. In 2011 Scopus registered 1 318 contributions from Cuban institutions. The most prolific health institutions were Havana University of Medical Sciences and Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine. The University of Havana ranked highest among institutions from other sectors. PubMed registries by Cuban institutions amounted to 373. The largest number of registries came from institutions from other areas (56.32%). Most publications in Scopus correspond to national journals, particularly from the health sector, in contrast with PubMed, where no Cuban journal has been processed since 2006. This trend has a negative effect upon the circulation of research results obtained by Cuban authors from the country's scientific community, particularly from the health sector.
