Present-day society is amidst a process of rapid change characterized by an intense power struggle in all sectors of human life. The information industry in particular, with its technologies, products and services, is experiencing fast growth and transformation. With the purpose of illustrating this process, a study was conducted of bibliographic information services. After making a general description of their evolution and current status worldwide, we focused on the intense competition waged by two large information monopolies: Reed Elsevier and Thomson Reuters, for the control of the scientific and technological information driving the world today.
