Introduction: the blood banks have blood and its derivatives as a basic component for their work. The use of this component contributes to save many lives but it can also become a potential risk to health when it is not subjected to a strict quality control; so it is necessary to have a highly reliable quality control that guarantees the quality of the released blood. Objectives: to build up an instrument that allows the evaluation of the implementation process of a computer system for the blood bank network of the country. Methods: an instrument that allowed to evaluate, according to prestablished dimensions, the implementation of the computer application in the blood bank national network was built up. The evaluation was carried out in 48 blood banks in the country. The study was done in two phases. The first one was implemented by a descriptive exploratory design and the second consisted on the application of the instrument 6 and 12 months after the implementation of the system in the blood bank national network of the country. A detailed bibliographic review and consultation to national experts was carried out. The general aspects about the functioning, organization and acceptability by the health personnel were also studied. Results: a progressive improvement between the six months and the year of the implementation in relation to usefulness, capacity for self-recovery and general effectiveness of the system was shown. it was also evidenced that its implementation generated organizational changes. Conclusions: the system is accepted by users, dimension that increases a year after its implementation.
