Resumen
CANEDO ANDALIA, Rubén et al. Citation differences between Cuban scientific production about health published in national and in foreign journals. Rev. cuba. inf. cienc. salud [online]. 2015, vol.26, n.2, pp.148-167. ISSN 2307-2113.
With the purpose of identifying citation differences between publications by Cuban authors in national and foreign journals in the topic areas of Health Sciences and Medicine, a bibliographic search was conducted in Scopus database from 1996 to 2002. A total 16 461 references were found to authors from Cuban health institutions. Of these, 55,68 % corresponded to national journals and 44,32 % to foreign journals. In the field of Medicine, 11 469 references were found, 63,50 % in national journals and 36,50 % in foreign journals. In both Health Sciences and Medicine, at least 87 % of the papers published in national journals either had just one citation or had not been cited in a period extending from approximately one and a half to seven and a half years. Inclusion of many Cuban health journals in Scopus has granted them greater international visibility. However, mean citation rates for contributions by authors from Cuban institutions are lower than those for papers published in foreign journals. It is therefore urgent to start a nationwide movement aimed at improving the quality of contributions edited by national health journals.
