PEREZ MOYA, Felicia e RIVERA, Zoia. The Public Library and the Universe of Cultural Practices. ARCIC [online]. 2019, vol.8, n.19, pp. 21-37. Epub 01-Nov-2019. ISSN 2411-9970.
The purpose of this research is to examine consumption practices and tastes and preferences associated with the cultural goods that the public library has historically promoted in the Sancti Spíritus region. In order to obtain data, the biographical method, supported by in-depth interviews and group discussion, was used. Thirty-four participants were selected. An analysis was performed of the holdings of the Provincial Archive associations, local magazines and newspapers, cultural programs and projects, institutional agreements, and collective technical records. A key contribution of this study is the application of cultural studies in determining how the library has stimulated cultural consumption by means of social practices and uses associated with reading tastes and preferences and literacy and the public use of socialization spaces in which those practices and uses have been articulated and have represented various manifestations of popular culture. Importantly, the meanings highlighted by various social groups refer to subjective relationships with the librarian and the influence of the library on axiological questions directly corresponding to the potential for individual and collective fulfillment through the consumption of symbolic goods.
