Policy design is important to develop adequate research data management in universities. This study aims to examine the main elements or components of research data management policies in universities. For this, an Internet search was carried out and 105 policies were retrieved. Documentary analysis and the analytical-synthetic method were used to study them. The content analysis allowed to specify the elements or components that are essential for a policy, they are: research data management plans, access, retention, security, storage, metadata and documentation, ownership, collaborative research projects, and responsibilities. As well as the introduction, scope, purpose, definitions, and policy statement. Universities should consider adopting these elements when developing and updating policies.
