Introduction:

the deleterious effects of uremia, temporary renal replacement therapies, immunosuppressive medication and the overdimensioned action of oxidative stress in renal transplant recipients, lead to accelerated post-graft atherosclerosis.

Objective:

to relate the expression of oxidative stress indicators with clinical laboratory and immunosuppressive parameters in patients with functioning renal transplantation.

Methods:

A total of 127 samples were analyzed: 54 from transplanted patients attended in the Nephrology Service and 73 supposedly healthy individuals taken as control. It was determined the activity of antioxidant enzymes; superoxide dismutase, catalase, as well as glutathione concentrations by spectrophotometric techniques. Clinical laboratory variables included; hemoglobin, creatinine, uric acid and albumin. Immunosuppressive therapies were based on combinations of prednisone, mycophelonate mofetil®, tacrolimus® and cyclosporine A®. The statistical program SPSS was used for comparisons and correlations, taking into account a significance level of 95%.

Results:

It was evidenced a significant decrease of the three oxidative stress indicators in transplanted patients. No significant differences were found when comparing clinical laboratory variables with oxidative stress indicators in subgroups of patients. There were also no differences between combinations of inmunosuppressants, creatinine levels and endogenous antioxidants.

Conclusions:

Affectation of endogenous antioxidant system in patients with renal transplant is confirmed, independently of the use of immunosuppressors.
