<body><![CDATA[<br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Resultados:</b>    Os participantes da pesquisa apresentaram renda e escolaridade baixas. A higiene    di&#225;ria das pr&#243;teses, a escova&#231;&#227;o com dentifr&#237;cio, a    n&#227;o remo&#231;&#227;o das pr&#243;teses para dormir e a utiliza&#231;&#227;o    das mesmas por mais de seis anos foram verificadas na maior parte da amostra.    <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Conclus&#227;o:</b>    Demonstrou-se uma alta presen&#231;a de <i>Candida </i>spp<i>.</i> nos usu&#225;rios    de pr&#243;teses dent&#225;rias remov&#237;veis e <i>Candida</i> <i>albicans</i>    foi a esp&#233;cie mais prevalente. </font></p>     <p> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Palavras-chave:</b>    <i>Candida</i>; pr&#243;tese dent&#225;ria; higiene bucal; estomatite. </font></p> <hr>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>RESUMEN</b>    </font></p>     <p> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Introducci&#243;n:</b>    El uso continuo de las pr&#243;tesis removibles y la higiene inadecuada de estas    pueden conducir al desarrollo de la estomatitis prot&#233;sica, enfermedad frecuente    en usuarios de pr&#243;tesis y muy asociada a la <i>Candida</i> spp.     <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Objetivo:</b>    determinar las caracter&#237;sticas sociales y los cuidados de los individuos    con la higienizaci&#243;n de las pr&#243;tesis dentales removibles, as&#237;    como la presencia de especies de Candida en usuarios de pr&#243;tesis en una    comunidad del municipio de Cabedelo, Para&#237;ba, Brasil.     <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>M&#233;todos:</b>    Se trata de un estudio piloto, transversal, observacional y de laboratorio con    la evaluaci&#243;n de 14 voluntarios. Se utilizaron formularios de investigaci&#243;n    y se realiz&#243; la recolecci&#243;n, el aislamiento e identificaci&#243;n    del material biol&#243;gico.     <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Resultados:</b>    Los participantes de la encuesta presentaron ingresos y escolaridad bajos. <body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>ABSTRACT</b>    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>ntroduction</b>    : The continued use of dentures and inadequate hygiene may lead to the development    of denture stomatitis, a frequent disease in patients who wear dentures and    very much associated with <i>Candida</i> spp.    <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Objective</b>    : To determine the social characteristics and the care of the individuals with    the hygiene of their dentures, as well as the presence of <i>Candida</i> species    in patients who wear dentures from a community of Cabedelo Municipality, Para&#237;ba,    Brazil.    <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Methods</b>    : This is a pilot, cross-sectional, observational and laboratory study with    the evaluation of 14 volunteers. Research forms were used and the collection,    isolation and identification of the biological material were carried out.    <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Results</b>    : The participants had low income and schooling. <body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> A preval&#234;ncia    do edentulismo parcial e/ou total &#233; elevada nos idosos, e dados anteriores    mostraram uma higiene pobre das pr&#243;teses frequente entre esses pacientes.<sup>1</sup>    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Para preservar    a sa&#250;de bucal e manter os dispositivos prot&#233;ticos, &#233; importante    n&#227;o s&#243; melhorar as propriedades de produtos de higiene comumente conhecidos,    mas tamb&#233;m investigar novos materiais com a&#231;&#227;o antimicrobiana.<sup>2</sup>    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> As concentra&#231;&#245;es    e a dura&#231;&#227;o das solu&#231;&#245;es de limpeza influenciam a manuten&#231;&#227;o    das pr&#243;teses dent&#225;rias quanto &#224; estabilidade da cor. A escova&#231;&#227;o    representa a pr&#225;tica de higiene mais comumente aplicada, por&#233;m as    atitudes quanto &#224;s diretrizes recomendadas aos portadores de pr&#243;tese    n&#227;o s&#227;o cumpridas.<sup>3</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> O uso cont&#237;nuo,    a n&#227;o remo&#231;&#227;o para dormir e a higiene inadequada da pr&#243;tese    pode levar ao desenvolvimento da estomatite prot&#233;tica.<sup>4-6</sup> Doen&#231;a    prevalente em usu&#225;rios de pr&#243;teses, caracterizada por inflama&#231;&#227;o    e eritema das &#225;reas de mucosa oral cobertas pela pr&#243;tese. Essa patologia    possui etiologia multifatorial, sendo <i>Candida albicans</i> a esp&#233;cie    mais associada, por sua ades&#227;o e prolifera&#231;&#227;o sob as bases das    pr&#243;teses.<sup>6,7-12</sup> Estudos t&#234;m sido realizados para verificar    a presen&#231;a desse micro-organismo em usu&#225;rios de pr&#243;teses e determinar    sua rela&#231;&#227;o com o desenvolvimento da candid&#237;ase oral.<sup>7,9,12,13</sup>    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Esta pesquisa    analisou as caracter&#237;sticas sociais e os cuidados dos indiv&#237;duos com    a higieniza&#231;&#227;o das pr&#243;teses dent&#225;rias remov&#237;veis, assim    como a presen&#231;a de esp&#233;cies de <i>Candida</i> em usu&#225;rios de    pr&#243;teses numa comunidade do munic&#237;pio de Cabedelo, Para&#237;ba, Brasil.    </font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b><font size="3">M&#201;TODOS</font></b>    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b><font size="3">Tipo    de estudo</font></b> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Realizou-se um    estudo piloto, transversal, observacional e laboratorial. A amostra foi selecionada    por conveni&#234;ncia e composta por 14 indiv&#237;duos. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Essa pesquisa    foi submetida e aprovada pelo Comit&#234; de &#201;tica em Pesquisa do Centro    de Ci&#234;ncias da Sa&#250;de da Universidade Federal da Para&#237;ba, Jo&#227;o    Pessoa, Para&#237;ba, Brasil, de acordo com a resolu&#231;&#227;o 466/12 do    Conselho Nacional de Sa&#250;de/MS (n&#250;mero de protocolo: 0395/16). Todos    os participantes assinaram o termo de consentimento livre e esclarecido. </font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> A coleta dos dados    por meio do formul&#225;rio de investiga&#231;&#227;o e a coleta do material    biol&#243;gico foram realizadas na comunidade Recanto do Po&#231;o, Cabedelo,    Para&#237;ba, Brasil. A identifica&#231;&#227;o das leveduras foi realizada    no Laborat&#243;rio de Micologia do Departamento de Ci&#234;ncias Farmac&#234;uticas    do Centro de Ci&#234;ncias da Sa&#250;de da Universidade Federal da Para&#237;ba,    Jo&#227;o Pessoa, Para&#237;ba, Brasil. O per&#237;odo da coleta compreendeu    agosto a novembro de 2016. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> De acordo com    os crit&#233;rios de inclus&#227;o, participaram adultos, com idade igual ou    superior a 18 anos, de ambos os sexos, que utilizavam pr&#243;teses dent&#225;rias    remov&#237;veis (totais ou parciais - com ou sem estrutura met&#225;lica). Foram    inclu&#237;dos usu&#225;rios saud&#225;veis ou com diagn&#243;stico cl&#237;nico    de estomatite prot&#233;tica, e exclu&#237;dos pessoas menores de 18 anos de    idade e/ou que n&#227;o utilizavam pr&#243;teses dent&#225;rias remov&#237;veis.    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> O formul&#225;rio    semi-estruturado adaptado de: Aoun et al, 2017; Shankar et al, 2017; Ercalik-Yalcinkaya    et al, 2015 foi composto por oito perguntas que abordaram dados sobre a utiliza&#231;&#227;o    e higieniza&#231;&#227;o das pr&#243;teses dent&#225;rias remov&#237;veis. </font></p>     <p>&nbsp; </p>     <p> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b><font size="3">An&#225;lise    laboratorial</font></b> </font></p>     <p> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Isolamento    e identifica&#231;&#227;o de <i>Candida </i>spp</b><b>.</b> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">As cepas de <i>Candida    </i>spp. foram coletadas da cavidade bucal e da base das pr&#243;teses dos participantes    da pesquisa. O isolamento e identifica&#231;&#227;o das esp&#233;cies seguiram    os crit&#233;rios estabelecidos por <i>Looder</i>,<sup>14</sup> <i>Hoog</i>    e <i>Garro</i>,<sup>15</sup> <i>Kurtzmann</i> e <i>Fell</i>,<sup>16</sup> <i>Sidrim</i>    e <i>Rocha</i>.<sup>17</sup> A identifica&#231;&#227;o das leveduras foi realizada    com base na macro e micromorfologia, provas fisiologias e bioqu&#237;micas.    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Foram utilizados    dois swabs (INLAB<sup>&#174;</sup> Confian&#231;a, Brasil) est&#233;reis. O    primeiro umedecido em solu&#231;&#227;o fisiol&#243;gica esterilizada, aplicado    no palato duro da cavidade oral do participante com movimentos de fric&#231;&#227;o,    por 30 s, e inserido em um tubo de ensaio com Caldo Sabouraud Dextrose (Difco    Laboratories Ltda. USA/France) para o transporte at&#233; o laborat&#243;rio.    O segundo swab foi friccionado sob a base da pr&#243;tese e imerso em outro    tubo. O material biol&#243;gico coletado foi inoculado em placas de Petri descart&#225;veis    15 x 90 mm (Dispopetri), contendo &#193;gar Sabouraud Dextrose (ASD) (Difco    Laboratories Ltda. USA/France), adicionado de cloranfenicol a 100 &#181;g/mL    (Sigma Chemichal Corporation, St Louis, MO, USA). Decorrido o per&#237;odo de    24-48h em estufa bacteriol&#243;gica a 35 &#177; 2 &#186;C as col&#244;nias    crescidas e com aspectos de fungos leveduriformes foram isoladas em CHROMOagar-<i>Candida    </i>(Difco Laboratories Ltda. USA/France) e ap&#243;s a verifica&#231;&#227;o    do crescimento nas placas as col&#244;nias foram avaliadas quanto &#224; colora&#231;&#227;o    e ao morfotipo. Ap&#243;s esta avalia&#231;&#227;o, a identifica&#231;&#227;o    presuntiva foi realizada. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> A colora&#231;&#227;o    verde-clara a m&#233;dio da col&#244;nia indica presen&#231;a da <i>C. albicans</i>,    a colora&#231;&#227;o azul escuro a azul met&#225;lico indica <i>C. tropicalis,    </i>a rosa clara com bordas esbranqui&#231;adas indica <i>C. krusei e </i>as    outras leveduras podem aparecer tanto na sua cor natural (creme) ou cor de malva    claro/escuro (exemplo <i>C. glabrata </i>e outras esp&#233;cies), segundo os    crit&#233;rios estabelecidos pelo fabricante<i>. </i>Os meios de culturas foram    preparados de acordo com as instru&#231;&#245;es do fabricante e os cultivos    incubados a temperatura de 35 &#177; 2 &#186;C por 24-48 h. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Os seguintes testes    foram realizados para a identifica&#231;&#227;o da esp&#233;cie de <i>Candida    </i>(<i>Looder</i>,<sup>14</sup> <i>Hoog</i> e<i>Garro</i>,<sup>15</sup> <i>Kurtzmann</i>    e <i>Fell</i>,<sup>16</sup> <i>Sidrim</i> e <i>Rocha</i><sup>17</sup>): </font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Prova do tubo    germinativo </b> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Retirou-se uma    al&#237;quota de uma col&#244;nia da levedura com uma al&#231;a de platina calibrada    (0,001 mL) e, em seguida, emulsionou-se de forma ass&#233;ptica em 0,5 mL de    soro. Finalizando este per&#237;odo, foi removida uma gota da suspens&#227;o e montada    uma prepara&#231;&#227;o do tipo l&#226;mina-lam&#237;nula, para observa&#231;&#227;o    microsc&#243;pica. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> O tubo germinativo,    quando o teste &#233; positivo, aparece como filamento fino e cil&#237;ndrico,    originado do blastocon&#237;dio da levedura, no qual n&#227;o se observa nenhuma    zona de constric&#231;&#227;o, quer na base ou ao longo de sua extens&#227;o.    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Microcultivo    de leveduras </b> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Colocou-se 3 mL    de &#193;gar Fub&#225;, ainda l&#237;quido, sobre a l&#226;mina do microcultivo,    com pipeta est&#233;ril. Quando o meio se solidificou, com al&#231;a de platina,    foi apreendida uma al&#237;quota da col&#244;nia de levedura e semeada em estria    no &#193;gar Fub&#225; e, em seguida, coberta com lam&#237;nula est&#233;ril.    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Ap&#243;s 2 a    3 dias &#224; 35 &#177; 2 &#186;C a prepara&#231;&#227;o foi observada em microsc&#243;pio    com aumento de 40x, identificando-se as caracter&#237;sticas morfol&#243;gicas    inerentes &#224;s leveduras, como pseudo-hifas e/ou hifas verdadeiras. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b> Provas bioqu&#237;micas    realizadas conforme protocolo de Sidrim e Rocha <sup>17</sup> (2004): </b> Auxanograma    (assimila&#231;&#227;o de carboidratos e nitrog&#234;nio); e fermenta&#231;&#227;o    de carboidratos </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Assimila&#231;&#227;o    de carboidratos:<b> </b> </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Preparou-se    o meio Yeast Nitrogen Base (YNB) (Difco Laboratories Ltda. USA/France) de acordo    com as normas preconizadas pelo fabricante, e uma suspens&#227;o de leveduras    com turva&#231;&#227;o equivalente ao tubo 0,5 da escala de MacFarland. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Uma al&#237;quota    de 2 mL desta suspens&#227;o de leveduras foi adicionada a 38 mL de meio basal    fundido e resfriado, sendo transferida para uma placa de Petri e homogeneizada    suavemente. Ap&#243;s a solidifica&#231;&#227;o do meio, discos impregnados    com a&#231;&#250;cares foram posicionados em locais previamente demarcados.    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> As fontes de carbono    utilizadas foram: dextrose, lactose, sacarose, maltose, trealose, celobiose,    melibiose, L-arabinitol, arabinose, glucosamina, sorbito, inositol, melizitose,    galactose e ramnose. Incubou-se a 35 &#177; 2 &#186;C por 24-48 h e foram observadas    regi&#245;es opacas ao redor dos a&#231;&#250;cares assimilados. </font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Assimila&#231;&#227;o    de nitrog&#234;nio:<b> </b> </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Preparou-se    o meio Yeast Carbon Base (YCB) (Difco Laboratories Ltda. USA/France), de acordo    com as indica&#231;&#245;es do fabricante. E em 19mL deste meio resfriado foi    acrescentado 1 mL da suspens&#227;o de levedura previamente preparada (com turva&#231;&#227;o    correspondente ao tubo 0,5 da escala de MacFarland). Ap&#243;s a homogeneiza&#231;&#227;o    e solidifica&#231;&#227;o do meio, foram distribu&#237;dos discos impregnados    de compostos nitrogenados (nitrato de pot&#225;ssio e peptona). A peptona foi    empregada como controle da viabilidade do in&#243;culo, visto que todas as leveduras    a utilizam como fonte nitrogenada. Incubou-se a 35 &#177; 2 &#186;C por 24-48    h e foram observadas regi&#245;es opacas ao redor dos compostos nitrogenados    assimilados. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Fermenta&#231;&#227;o    de carboidratos: </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Preparou-se    o meio basal para fermenta&#231;&#227;o e distribuiu-se em tubos de ensaio,    contendo um tubo de Durham invertido em seu interior, em al&#237;quotas de 3    mL. Em seguida foi adicionado ao meio 1,5 mL da solu&#231;&#227;o de a&#231;&#250;cares    (6 % em &#225;gua destilada), mantendo sempre a rela&#231;&#227;o de &#189;    da solu&#231;&#227;o de a&#231;&#250;cares para meio basal, 0,2 mL da suspens&#227;o    de levedura (turva&#231;&#227;o correspondente ao tubo 0,5 da escala de MacFarland).    Incubou-se os tubos em estufa bacteriol&#243;gica a 35 &#177; 2 &#186;C por    10-14 dias e observou-se a produ&#231;&#227;o de CO<sub>2</sub> atrav&#233;s    da visualiza&#231;&#227;o de bolhas. </font></p>     <p>&nbsp; </p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b><font size="3">An&#225;lise    estat&#237;stica</font></b> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Ap&#243;s a coleta    dos dados, foram fornecidas informa&#231;&#245;es verbais e em folheto autoexplicativo    com instru&#231;&#245;es sobre os cuidados com a pr&#243;tese dent&#225;ria.    Os dados obtidos foram computados no programa Microsoft Excel 2013 for Windows    7 e analisados descritivamente. </font></p>     <p>&nbsp; </p>     <p> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b><font size="3">RESULTADOS</font></b>    </font></p>     <p align="left"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> A    m&#233;dia de idade foi de 58,42 com desvio-padr&#227;o &#177;10,73, sendo a    idade m&#237;nima 36 anos e m&#225;xima 73. As caracter&#237;sticas sociais    e os h&#225;bitos sobre higiene oral dos participantes da pesquisa se encontram    na <a href="#tab1">tabela 1</a>.</font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><a name="tab1"></a><img src="/img/revistas/est/v55n4/t01_1982.gif" width="500" height="650">.    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Esp&#233;cies    de <i>Candida</i> provenientes da pr&#243;tese dent&#225;ria estavam presentes    em 78,5 % da amostra coletada. <i>Candida albicans</i> foi a esp&#233;cie mais    prevalente (71,4 %) seguida da <i>C. parapsilosis</i> (7,1 %). </font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Na mucosa oral,    71,4 % de <i>Candida</i> spp. foram isoladas e identificadas, com 64,2 % sendo    <i>C. albicans</i> e 7,1 % <i>C. parapsilosis </i>(<a href="/img/revistas/est/v55n4/t02_1982.gif">tabela    2</a>). </font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b><font size="3">DISCUSS&#195;O</font></b>    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> As caracter&#237;sticas    sociais dos indiv&#237;duos, neste estudo, como a m&#233;dia de idade (58,42    &#177; 10,73) se assemelham ao estudo de <i>Cakan et al.</i>,<sup>18</sup> os    quais apresentaram m&#233;dia de 57,77 &#177; 8,67. A faixa et&#225;ria variou    entre 36 a 73 anos e se aproximou da pesquisa de <i>Ercalik-Yalcinkaya</i> <i>    et al</i><i>.</i>,<sup>19</sup> no qual a varia&#231;&#227;o esteve entre 29    a 86 anos. O sexo feminino prevaleceu, assim como nas pesquisas de <i>Aoun et    al</i> <i>.</i>;<sup>20</sup> <i>Cakan et al.</i><sup>18</sup> e <i>Ercalik-Yalcinkaya</i>    <i> et al</i>.<sup>19</sup> A baixa renda e escolaridade foram as mais identificadas    corroborando com o estudo de <i>Cakan et al</i>.<sup>18</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> N&#227;o h&#225;    um consenso na literatura sobre a influ&#234;ncia das caracter&#237;sticas sociais    no desenvolvimento de infec&#231;&#245;es por <i>Candida </i>spp<i>.</i> <i>Loster    et al</i>.<sup>21</sup> verificaram que essas infec&#231;&#245;es parecem ter    rela&#231;&#227;o com a idade e sexo em usu&#225;rios de pr&#243;teses. Outros    autores<sup>18,22</sup> afirmam que os h&#225;bitos e pr&#225;ticas de higiene    nem sempre apresentam uma correla&#231;&#227;o positiva com o sexo, n&#237;vel    educacional e renda dos indiv&#237;duos. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Neste estudo,    a maioria dos participantes realizaram a higieniza&#231;&#227;o di&#225;ria    das pr&#243;teses atrav&#233;s de escova&#231;&#227;o com pasta. Observou-se    ainda que uma grande parcela permanece com as pr&#243;teses na boca durante    o sono e possuem mais de seis anos de utiliza&#231;&#227;o das mesmas. Esses    resultados tamb&#233;m foram constatados por <i>Aoun et al.</i>,<sup>20</sup>    <i>Shankar et al.</i>,<sup>22</sup> Cakan et al.,<sup>18</sup> Ercalik-Yalcinkaya    et al.<sup>19</sup> A higiene da cavidade oral e das pr&#243;teses &#233; importante    na preven&#231;&#227;o da coloniza&#231;&#227;o de<i>Candida </i>spp. e do desenvolvimento    da candid&#237;ase oral.<sup>23</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> O desenvolvimento    de infec&#231;&#245;es oportunistas por falta de higiene das pr&#243;teses dent&#225;rias    justifica a procura por protocolos de higieniza&#231;&#227;o para o controle    do biofilme.<sup>2</sup> Ressalta-se que os componentes encontrados em pastas    abrasivas para a limpeza das pr&#243;teses influenciam na rugosidade de superf&#237;cie    da resina acr&#237;lica.<sup>24</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Hipoclorito de    s&#243;dio tem demonstrado ser eficaz na remo&#231;&#227;o de biofilme, remiss&#227;o    de candid&#237;ase oral e redu&#231;&#227;o da forma&#231;&#227;o de col&#244;nias    microbiol&#243;gicas nas superf&#237;cies das pr&#243;teses.<sup>1,2</sup> Lavar    as pr&#243;teses normalmente com &#225;gua sem escova de dentes diariamente    e limpar uma vez de 10 a 15 dias com uma escova de dentes macia e um limpador    de pr&#243;tese profissional deve ser a forma de manuten&#231;&#227;o das pr&#243;teses    dent&#225;rias.<sup>24</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> O estudo de <i>Suresan    et al</i>.<sup>25</sup> demonstrou que uma parcela (18 %) de cirurgi&#245;es-dentistas    respondeu erroneamente quando questionados se os biofilmes orais presentes na    pr&#243;tese total se associa a condi&#231;&#245;es como estomatite prot&#233;tica    e outras doen&#231;as sist&#234;micas graves. Da mesma forma, os 119 participantes    da pesquisa n&#227;o obtiveram um consenso sobre o uso de pasta de dente na    limpeza de pr&#243;teses dent&#225;rias. Sugere-se que a falta de conhecimento    dos profissionais quanto &#224; higiene prot&#233;tica pode influenciar nos    h&#225;bitos apresentados pelos usu&#225;rios de pr&#243;teses. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Os resultados    encontrados como a alta presen&#231;a de <i>Candida </i>spp. e os h&#225;bitos    insatisfat&#243;rios de higieniza&#231;&#227;o das pr&#243;teses podem estar    relacionados ao conhecimento e/ou orienta&#231;&#245;es insuficientes dos profissionais    aos seus pacientes. O conhecimento sobre os cuidados com a sa&#250;de oral e    a higiene das pr&#243;teses dent&#225;rias deve ser difundido pelos protesistas    ou cirurgi&#245;es-dentistas para uma correta orienta&#231;&#227;o dos pacientes.<sup>18,25,26</sup>    </font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> A alta presen&#231;a    de esp&#233;cies de <i>Candida</i>, com <i>C. albicans</i> a mais isolada e    identificada em usu&#225;rios de pr&#243;teses corrobora com os resultados encontrados    na literatura.<sup>7,12,24</sup> <i>C. albicans</i> possui capacidade de causar    infec&#231;&#245;es oportunistas, incluindo candid&#237;ase oral devido aos    seus fatores de virul&#234;ncia.<sup>23</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Dentre os limites    dessa pesquisa, um maior n&#250;mero de amostra e de diferentes comunidades    deve ser obtido para a generaliza&#231;&#227;o dos resultados. A popula&#231;&#227;o    estudada no munic&#237;pio de Cabedelo, Para&#237;ba, Brasil apresentou uma    alta presen&#231;a de esp&#233;cies de <i>Candida</i>, com destaque para <i>C.albicans</i>.    Programas de conscientiza&#231;&#227;o e orienta&#231;&#245;es sobre a correta    higiene das pr&#243;teses e seus cuidados, como a remo&#231;&#227;o e armazenamento    da pr&#243;tese em &#225;gua durante o sono, s&#227;o interessantes para a melhoria    do quadro apresentado pela comunidade. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Os participantes    da pesquisa apresentaram renda e escolaridade baixas. A higiene di&#225;ria    das pr&#243;teses, a escova&#231;&#227;o com dentifr&#237;cios, a n&#227;o remo&#231;&#227;o    das pr&#243;teses durante o sono e a utiliza&#231;&#227;o das mesmas por mais    de seis anos foram verificadas em uma parcela consider&#225;vel da amostra estudada.
