El impacto negativo en la salud de los niños, hace necesario conocer claramente los mecanismos que predisponen a esta condición, para establecer las mejores estrategias terapéuticas en la atención integral de los pacientes.  Objetivo:  Obtener información recientemente publicada acerca de la interacción entre los genes y el medio ambiente en la obesidad infantil.  Métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica en la base de datos Medline a través de Pubmed de la literatura publicada acerca del tema entre enero del 2016 y setiembre del 2021 y se seleccionaron los artículos más relevantes.  Análisis e integración de la información: Inicialmente la obesidad se asoció con estilos de vida no saludables como la ingesta calórica exagerada y el sedentarismo y, posteriormente, mediante los estudios de asociación con el genoma completo se pudo descubrir la existencia de múltiples polimorfismos asociados al incremento del Índice de masa corporal, la adiposidad y el síndrome metabólico, sin que estos pudieran explicar completamente la expresión de la obesidad en la población.  Conclusiones: Hay evidencia suficiente para concluir que existe una interacción entre los genes y el medio ambiente para el desarrollo de la obesidad, la cual estaría influenciada por una susceptibilidad individual; sin embargo, se necesitan más estudios para comprender completamente los mecanismos involucrados.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction:  Childhood obesity represents one of the most important public health problems today and affects both developed and developing countries. The negative impact on the health of children makes it necessary to clearly know the mechanisms that predispose to this condition, in order to establish the best therapeutic strategies in the comprehensive care of patients.  Objective:  Obtain recently published information about the interaction between genes and the environment in childhood obesity.  Methods:  A bibliographic search was carried out in Medline database through Pubmed on the literature published on the subject between January 2016 and September 2021, selecting the most relevant articles.  Analysis and integration of information:  Initially, obesity was associated with unhealthy lifestyles such as exaggerated caloric intake and sedentary lifestyle and, later, through genome-wide association studies it was possible to discover the existence of multiple polymorphisms associated with the increase in body mass index, adiposity and metabolic syndrome, without these being able to fully explain the expression of obesity in the population.  Conclusions:  There is sufficient evidence to conclude that there is an interaction between genes and the environment for the development of obesity, which would be influenced by an individual susceptibility; however, more studies are needed to fully understand the mechanisms involved.]]></p></abstract>
