En los países con alta diversidad biológica como Colombia se busca ampliar el conocimiento biológico, químico y económico de especies vegetales con uso potencial. Objetivo: establecer la actividad antimicrobiana y antioxidante de los extractos de hojas de Jatropha curcas L. y de 3 variedades de Hibiscus cannabinus L. (Tainung, Everglades y Whitten). Métodos: las hojas se recolectaron en Restrepo (Meta) y se sometieron a extracción por soxhlet, y microondas con solventes de diferente polaridad como éter de petróleo, diclorometano y etanol (EP, CH2Cl2 y EtOH). La actividad antibacteriana se estableció por difusión en agar frente a cepas de Escherichia coli y Staphylococcus aureus, y la actividad antioxidante por el método autobiográfico utilizando como agentes reveladores 2,2-difenil-1-picrilhidrazilo y ß-caroteno. Resultados: de acuerdo con los porcentajes de extracción hallados, se determinó que la mayoría de los compuestos presentes en estas especies tienen alta polaridad. Los extractos que presentaron la mayor actividad antioxidante fueron los correspondientes a las variedades de Hibiscus cannabinus y, en especial, los extractos de baja y alta polaridad obtenidos por el método de soxhlet. El 20 % del total de los extractos presentaron una respuesta favorable frente a las 2 cepas; los extractos obtenidos por el método de microondas resultaron más selectivos para Escherichia coli. Conclusión: este trabajo se presenta como una contribución al avance de investigaciones biodirigidas, que identifiquen principios activos para el desarrollo de antibióticos y antioxidantes naturales a partir de residuos agroforestales.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Introduction: the agroforestry species are important sources of useful secondary metabolites for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and veterinary medicine. Those countries with high biodiversity like Colombia are looking to expand the biological, chemical and economic knowledge about plant species with potential uses. Objective: to determine the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of leaf extracts of Jatropha curcas L. and three varieties of Hibiscus cannabinus L. (Tainung, Everglades and Whitten). Methods: the leaves were collected in Restrepo (Meta) and subjected to Soxhlet and microwave extraction processes with different polarity solvents such as petroleum ether, dichloromethane and ethanol (EP, CH2Cl2 and EtOH). The antibacterial activity was established by agar diffusion method against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus strains, whereas antioxidant activity was determined by the autobiographical method using developing agents 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and ß-carotene. Results: in accordance with the extraction percentages found, most of the compounds present in these species had high polarity. The extracts with the highest antioxidant activity were those of Hibiscus cannabinus varieties, particularly low and high polarity extracts obtained by the Soxhlet method. The 20 % of total extracts showed a positive response against the two strains, being the extracts obtained by the microwave method more selective for Escherichia coli strains. Conclusion: this paper is a contribution to the development of bio-directed research to identify the active principles for the development of antibiotics and natural antioxidants from agroforestry wastes.]]></p></abstract>

<body><![CDATA[<p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><B> </B></p> <B>     <P>      <P>      <P>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="3">INTRODUCCI&Oacute;N </font>  </B>      <P>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">La utilizaci&oacute;n de plantas con fines medicinales    es una actividad realizada por el hombre que ha trascendido como parte de la    historia cultural de los pueblos. En diversos pa&iacute;ses se ha reportado    que cerca de 74 % de los f&aacute;rmacos usados, derivan de su empleo en la    medicina tradicional. El manejo de sustancias qu&iacute;micas derivadas de vegetales    brinda la oportunidad de encontrar principios activos, que son una fuente de    materia prima natural con uso farmacol&oacute;gico.<SUP>1-3</SUP> </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">La medicina tradicional tiene una larga historia    en muchos lugares y sigue proporcionando herramientas &uacute;tiles y aplicables    para el tratamiento de enfermedades.<SUP>4,5</SUP> Alrededor de 60 a 80 % de    la poblaci&oacute;n mundial a&uacute;n depende de medicinas tradicionales para    el tratamiento de las enfermedades comunes,<SUP>6,7</SUP> sin embargo, la investigaci&oacute;n    cient&iacute;fica sobre productos derivados de plantas con uso medicinal ha    sido limitada. El estudio qu&iacute;mico y biol&oacute;gico de plantas etnomedicinales    proporciona informaci&oacute;n valiosa sobre actividades biol&oacute;gicas de    inter&eacute;s en muchas regiones y pa&iacute;ses, adem&aacute;s de propiciar    la b&uacute;squeda de fitof&aacute;rmacos para que la poblaci&oacute;n disponga    de medicamentos rigurosamente estudiados.<SUP>8-13</SUP> </font>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Actualmente es enorme la difusi&oacute;n y popularidad    de las terapias naturales en el mundo. Se aconsejan no solo como alternativas    en los servicios de salud sino como primera intenci&oacute;n antes de pasar    a medicamentos m&aacute;s agresivos para el tratamiento de diversas afecciones.<SUP>14</SUP>    En este contexto, diversos estudios reportan las actividades biol&oacute;gicas    derivadas de extractos de plantas que describen propiedades como antiinflamatorio,    antiespasm&oacute;dico, antihelm&iacute;ntico, analg&eacute;sico, estimulante,    anticatarral, antioxidante y antibacteriana; en cuanto a esta actividad va desde    la inhibici&oacute;n completa o parcial del crecimiento microbiano hasta la    acci&oacute;n bactericida.<SUP>10,13,15-17</SUP> </font>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Para dar respuesta al incremento de las infecciones    y a la resistencia contra antibi&oacute;ticos, hay varios grupos de investigaci&oacute;n    que desarrollan estudios a partir de plantas medicinales,<SUP>18-21</SUP> que    se han constituido en una nueva fuente de agentes antimicrobianos. As&iacute;    mismo, algunas plantas son fuente de sustancias antioxidantes, lo cual ha incentivado    su estudio y se ha convertido en un reto para minimizar los efectos de los radicales    libres responsables de enfermedades cardiovasculares, derrame cerebral, arteriosclerosis    y c&aacute;ncer, as&iacute; como mol&eacute;culas implicadas en el proceso de    envejecimiento.<SUP>22-25 </SUP> </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">En Colombia y especialmente en la Orinoqu&iacute;a,    los estudios dirigidos a evaluar la actividad medicinal de extractos de plantas    son limitados; por tal motivo, el prop&oacute;sito de este trabajo era establecer    la actividad antimicrobiana y antioxidante de los extractos de hojas de <I>J.    curcas</I>,<I> </I>y de 3 variedades de <I>H. cannabinus </I>(Tainung, Everglades    y Whitten) presentes en esta regi&oacute;n. </font>     <P>&nbsp;      <P>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="3"><B>M&Eacute;TODOS</B> </font>      <P>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2"><I>Material vegetal</I> </font>     <P>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Las hojas de las especies <I>H. cannabinus</I>    en sus 3 variedades (Everglades, Tainung y Whittten) y <I>J. curcas</I>, se    recolectaron en cultivos de la Universidad de La Salle en Restrepo (Meta) por    el ingeniero forestal Trino Trivi&ntilde;o. Las semillas de estas especies para    su cultivo fueron donadas por el <I>Centro </I>Internacional de Agricultura    Tropical (CIAT). </font>     <P>      ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P><font face="Verdana" size="2"><I>Obtenci&oacute;n de extractos</I> </font>     <P>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">El material vegetal se sec&oacute; en un horno    a 50 &#176;C durante 3 d&iacute;as, luego se moli&oacute; manualmente y se someti&oacute;    a extracci&oacute;n (microondas y <I>Soxhlet</I>) utilizando como solventes    &eacute;ter de petr&oacute;leo (EP), diclorometano (CH<SUB>2</SUB>Cl<SUB>2</SUB>)    y etanol (EtOH). Para la extracci&oacute;n por microondas se utilizaron 10 g    de material vegetal y 100 mL de cada uno de los solventes seleccionados; la    radiaci&oacute;n del microondas se aplic&oacute; por 15 s con una potencia de    125 MHz hasta completar 5 min. Para la extracci&oacute;n por <I>Soxhlet</I>    se emplearon 16 g de <I>J. curcas,</I> 10 g de Whitten, 7 g de Tainung y 5 g    de Everglades. El material se someti&oacute; a extracci&oacute;n s&oacute;lido-l&iacute;quido    a la temperatura de ebullici&oacute;n de cada solvente por un per&iacute;odo    de 8 h. Cada una de las fracciones obtenidas se concentr&oacute; por destilaci&oacute;n    a presi&oacute;n reducida de 50 &#176;C y se utilizaron presiones en un rango    de 149 a 685 mbar, dependiendo del solvente. Posteriormente, las fracciones    se pesaron y almacenaron en frascos &aacute;mbar hasta su evaluaci&oacute;n.    </font>      <P>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2"><I>Actividad antioxidante </I> </font>     <P>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Se pesaron 30 mg de cada extracto y se solubilizaron    en 1 mL de metanol. De cada soluci&oacute;n se tomaron 10 &#181;L del extracto    solubilizado, que fue sembrado en 4 placas cromatogr&aacute;ficas de s&iacute;lica    gel a 1 cm del borde inferior. Para 2 placas se utiliz&oacute; una eluci&oacute;n    con hexano-acetato de etilo 8:2 (baja polaridad) y en las 2 restantes con cloroformo-metanol    85:15 (alta polaridad). Las placas se secaron en la cabina de extracci&oacute;n    y se observaron bajo la luz ultravioleta a una longitud de onda de 254 nm. </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2"><I>Bioautograf&iacute;a con DPPH (2,2-difenil-1-picril-hidrazilo)    y con &szlig;-caroteno</I> </font>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Las placas eluidas y secas se revelaron por aspersi&oacute;n;    2 con disoluci&oacute;n al 0,2 % del radical 2,2-difenil-1-pricrilhidracil (DPPH)    en metanol y las restantes con disoluci&oacute;n de &szlig;-caroteno al 0,005    % en cloroformo. Las placas se expusieron durante 30 min a luz blanca y ultravioleta    (254 nm), respectivamente. Para la determinaci&oacute;n de la actividad antioxidante    se utiliz&oacute; TLC (<I>thin layer cromatography</I>) y se tomaron como resultados    positivos aquellos que despu&eacute;s de esperar 30 min revelaron puntos amarillos    en un fondo violeta al utilizar DPPH,<SUP>26</SUP> y los que persistieron de    color amarillo sobre un fondo blanco al utilizar &szlig;-caroteno.<SUP>27,28</SUP>    </font>      <P>      ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P><font face="Verdana" size="2"><I>Metodolog&iacute;a actividad antibacteriana</I>    </font>     <P>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Para este ensayo se emplearon como microorganismos    indicadores de actividad las bacterias grampositiva, <I>S. aureus</I> y gramnegativa,    <I>E. coli</I> (cepas control). </font>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Se realizaron las pruebas de actividad antibacteriana    a partir de cultivos de 24 h de crecimiento de <I>E. coli</I> y <I>S. aureus</I>    en agar nutritivo. Se tomaron alrededor de 3 a 5 colonias y se inocularon en    los tubos que conten&iacute;an caldo nutritivo, se agitaron en <I>vortex</I>    hasta alcanzar una concentraci&oacute;n de 1,5 x 10<SUP>8 </SUP>c&eacute;lulas/mL,    correspondiente al tubo 0,5 de <I>McFarland</I>.<SUP>29</SUP> A continuaci&oacute;n,    se inocularon las cajas de <I>Petri</I> que conten&iacute;an agar <I>Mueller-Hinton</I>    (MH) (<I>Oxoid</I>) y se realiz&oacute; el m&eacute;todo por difusi&oacute;n,    mediante la utilizaci&oacute;n de hisopos de algod&oacute;n est&eacute;riles.<SUP>30</SUP>    As&iacute; mismo, se depositaron as&eacute;pticamente en los medios de MH, discos    est&eacute;riles de 6 mm de di&aacute;metro de papel cualitativo <I>Whatman</I>,<SUP>31</SUP>    impregnados con 10 &#181;L de cada uno de los extractos disueltos antes en dimetil    sulf&oacute;xido (DMSO), hasta obtener una concentraci&oacute;n final de 30    mg/mL. Se dej&oacute; como control negativo un disco de papel <I>Whatman</I>,    con 10 &#181;L de DMSO y como controles positivos discos de papel impregnados    de una soluci&oacute;n de cloranfenicol a una concentraci&oacute;n de 100 &micro;g/mL    (10 &micro;L/disco). </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Finalmente, las cajas se incubaron a 37 &#176;C    durante 18 a 24 h.Todos los ensayos se realizaron por triplicado y se determinaron    los di&aacute;metros de halos de inhibici&oacute;n de los extractos vegetales    frente a los microorganismos en estudio. Por &uacute;ltimo, se calcul&oacute;    el porcentaje de inhibici&oacute;n mediante la <a href="#fo1">f&oacute;rmula</a>    siguiente: </font>      <P><img src=/img/revistas/pla/v18n1/fo0108113.gif" width="357" height="51"><a name="fo1"></a>

<body><![CDATA[<P>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Los resultados de rendimiento de extracci&oacute;n    y de evaluaci&oacute;n de actividad antibacteriana y antioxidante se encuentran    en la <a href="#tab1">tabla</a>. En la <a href="#tab1">tabla</a> se reporta el n&uacute;mero    de manchas para cada uno de los extractos con los reveladores empleados; se    observa que el mayor n&uacute;mero de manchas se obtuvo para la variedad Tainung,    seguido por Whitten y Everglades. Al comparar los resultados con los 2 reveladores,    estos fueron similares; sin embargo, con el revelador &szlig;-caroteno se observ&oacute;    el mayor n&uacute;mero de manchas en todas las especies evaluadas. </font>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">En la <a href="#tab1">tabla</a> tambi&eacute;n    se muestran los resultados del estudio microbiol&oacute;gico, se observa que    el comportamiento antibacteriano de los extractos obtenidos de <I>J. curcas,    </I>Tainung con el m&eacute;todo de <I>Soxhlet</I> y microondas, extra&iacute;dos    en EtOH y EP, respectivamente, tuvieron actividad frente a las 2 bacterias;    result&oacute; mayor la actividad para <I>E. coli</I> con <I>J. curcas</I> y    mayor para <I>S. aureus</I> con Tainung. El extracto de Whitten obtenido con    etanol por microondas tambi&eacute;n present&oacute; actividad frente a las    2 bacterias. Por el contrario, el extracto obtenido de Everglades con el m&eacute;todo    de microondas y extra&iacute;do con CH<SUB>2</SUB>Cl<SUB>2 </SUB>solo present&oacute;    actividad antibacterial frente a <I>E. coli</I>. Las variedades Whitten y Everglades    con el m&eacute;todo de <I>Soxhlet</I> y los diferentes solventes no mostraron    ning&uacute;n tipo de actividad antibacterial. En cuanto al porcentaje de inhibici&oacute;n    de los extractos vegetales de <I>J. curcas</I>, Whitten, Tainung y Everglades    frente a las cepas pat&oacute;genas, se observ&oacute; un mayor porcentaje de    inhibici&oacute;n para <I>E. coli</I> con Whitten extra&iacute;do con EtOH por    microondas (64 %); mientras que para el extracto de Tainung, extra&iacute;do    por el mismo m&eacute;todo y utilizando el solvente EP, el porcentaje de inhibici&oacute;n    fue de 58 % para la bacteria <I>S. aureus</I>. </font>      <P>&nbsp;     <P>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="3"><B>DISCUSI&Oacute;N</B> </font>      ]]></body>

Esto    se debe a que el m&eacute;todo de microondas permite combinar la temperatura    (cercana al punto de ebullici&oacute;n del solvente), la potencia y el tiempo    de reacci&oacute;n, para favorecer la interacci&oacute;n de las mol&eacute;culas    polares con el solvente, aumentando la selectividad y el rendimiento de extracci&oacute;n.<SUP>32</SUP>    Mientras que por el m&eacute;todo <I>Soxhlet</I> solo se permite tener como    par&aacute;metros la temperatura y el tiempo de extracci&oacute;n, como los    responsables de las interacciones moleculares entre los metabolitos y el solvente,    que generan rendimientos bajos de extracci&oacute;n, al depender solo de la    similitud de la polaridad del metabolito y del solvente utilizado.<SUP>33</SUP>    </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Las variedades de <I>Hibiscus </I>presentaron    una disminuci&oacute;n en el rendimiento de extracci&oacute;n de 4, 21,22 y    19,30 % para Whitten, Tainung y Everglades, respectivamente, al comparar los    2 m&eacute;todos utilizados. Esto se debe quiz&aacute; a que los compuestos    contenidos en estas especies son de una polaridad menor que los contenidos en    <I>J. curcas</I>, por lo que la absorci&oacute;n de la radiaci&oacute;n se dispersa    a trav&eacute;s de estos grupos y evitar la vibraci&oacute;n molecular de los    compuestos, que disminuye as&iacute; la interacci&oacute;n soluto solvente y    el rendimiento de extracci&oacute;n.<SUP>33</SUP> </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Con respecto a los solventes EP y CH<SUB>2</SUB>Cl<SUB>2</SUB>,    los porcentajes de extracci&oacute;n son m&aacute;s bajos, con valores entre    1 y 6 %; existen diferencias de solo 1 a 2 % al comparar los 2 m&eacute;todos    utilizados. Esto se debe a que la radiaci&oacute;n de microondas es selectiva,    si se tiene en cuenta que solo es absorbida por los compuestos polares, o compuestos    que generan momentos dipolares que permiten aumentar la vibraci&oacute;n molecular.<SUP>34</SUP>    </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Las plantas son consideradas organismos fotosint&eacute;ticos    que est&aacute;n expuestos a ambientes muy oxidativos (radiaci&oacute;n solar,    ox&iacute;geno, entre otros), por lo cual, poseen un sistema antioxidante muy    eficaz. De esta manera, se han reportado diversos metabolitos, en especial sustancias    fen&oacute;licas como flavonoides y taninos; tambi&eacute;n otras sustancias    que act&uacute;an sin&eacute;rgicamente para potenciar el efecto antioxidante    como los tocoferoles, catequinas, &aacute;cidos org&aacute;nicos y carotenoides.<SUP>35,36</SUP>    </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Existe una gran variedad de pruebas para evaluar    esta actividad antioxidante que son empleadas en las investigaciones dirigidas    hacia la b&uacute;squeda de nuevas sustancias antioxidantes. Entre los m&eacute;todos    que existen para determinar esta actividad, se encuentran aquellos que tienen    como fundamento la captura de radicales libres.<SUP>37</SUP> Un m&eacute;todo    f&aacute;cil y econ&oacute;mico es la utilizaci&oacute;n de placas de TLC, <FONT  COLOR="#231f20">el cual </FONT>separa y determina de manera cualitativa y simult&aacute;nea    los compuestos antioxidantes mediante el uso de reveladores.<SUP>38</SUP> En    este estudio, la utilizaci&oacute;n del m&eacute;todo bioautogr&aacute;fico    permiti&oacute; determinar el <FONT  COLOR="#231f20">potencial antioxidante de los extractos obtenidos para cada una    de las variedades evaluadas, de una forma r&aacute;pida y exploratoria.</FONT></font>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Los resultados de este estudio indicaron que    las especies promisorias como fuente de sustancias antioxidantes son <FONT  COLOR="#231f20">Whitten y Tainung, debido a la presencia de </FONT>compuestos    de baja y alta polaridad que revelaron el mayor n&uacute;mero de manchas con    DPPH y &szlig;-caroteno. Esto representa una <FONT  COLOR="#231f20">moderada c</FONT>apacidad captadora de radicales libres e indica    que esos extractos poseen capacidad para proteger de la lipoperoxidaci&oacute;n    por el atrapamiento de radicales libres, tanto en la fase de iniciaci&oacute;n    como en la de propagaci&oacute;n.<SUP>39</SUP> Estos resultados est&aacute;n    relacionados con estudios del g&eacute;nero <I>Hibiscus,</I> en especial para    <I>H. sabdariffa</I>, la cual es una especie ampliamente conocida por sus propiedades    antioxidantes.<SUP>40-43</SUP> </font>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Los extractos de la variedad Everglades obtenidos    por microondas, no presentaron inhibici&oacute;n de los reveladores, y ninguno    de los extractos de <I>J. curcas</I> inhibi&oacute; el DPPH, en las condiciones    utilizadas de concentraci&oacute;n y fase m&oacute;vil. Para <I>J. curcas </I>se    han reportado algunos componentes que est&aacute;n relacionados con propiedades    antioxidantes; sin embargo, el solvente utilizado en la extracci&oacute;n fue    distinto al usado en este trabajo, lo cual puede explicar la diferencia de los    resultados.<SUP>44</SUP> Es as&iacute; como los resultados del rendimiento de    extracci&oacute;n y de la actividad antioxidante de los extractos evaluados    result&oacute; diferente para cada m&eacute;todo y solvente utilizado durante    la extracci&oacute;n, lo cual coincide con reportes previos que muestran especificidad    al solvente y al m&eacute;todo.<SUP>45</SUP> Eso se explica por las diferencias    en la polaridad de los compuestos antioxidantes; encontr&aacute;ndose principalmente    carotenoides, licopeno y fenoles de bajo peso molecular en los extractos de    baja polaridad y compuestos fen&oacute;licos como flavonoides, lignanos y alcaloides    en los de alta polaridad.<SUP>35,36 </SUP> </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Con este trabajo se estableci&oacute; que el    m&eacute;todo de <I>Soxhlet</I> es el m&aacute;s adecuado para obtener sustancias    antioxidantes frente al m&eacute;todo de microondas, eso se puede explicar porque    en este m&eacute;todo la energ&iacute;a utilizada para que entren en vibraci&oacute;n    las mol&eacute;culas, puede ocasionar alteraci&oacute;n de los compuestos fen&oacute;licos    u otros responsables de la actividad antioxidante. Adicionalmente, los resultados    son consistentes con estudios anteriores donde se ha determinado que la cantidad    de compuestos fen&oacute;licos extra&iacute;dos se ve afectada por la temperatura.<SUP>46</SUP>    </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">De los metabolitos secundarios de las plantas,    los compuestos fen&oacute;licos son los m&aacute;s numerosos y representativos;    su importancia radica en su participaci&oacute;n en la fisiolog&iacute;a y en    el metabolismo celular, sobre todo su acci&oacute;n antioxidante tiene gran    poder destructor de radicales libres. Entre los mecanismos moleculares postulados    para explicar esta propiedad se encuentra la capacidad como atrapadores de radicales    libres, como donadores de hidr&oacute;geno, su potencial como agentes reductores    y agentes quelantes.<SUP>35,47</SUP> Esto explica la actividad que presentan    los extractos etan&oacute;licos evaluados, en los cuales es probable que est&eacute;n    estos compuestos mayoritariamente. Sin embargo, el mecanismo de acci&oacute;n,    solo puede ser conocido tras una caracterizaci&oacute;n detallada de las fracciones    activas del extracto. </font>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Adicionalmente, en este estudio se observaron    actividades antioxidantes diferentes en los extractos etan&oacute;licos obtenidos    para cada una de las especies, resultados similares han sido reportados antes    y explican que este efecto est&aacute; relacionado con las diferencias que tienen    los compuestos fen&oacute;licos para detener la reacci&oacute;n de oxidaci&oacute;n,    que depende de la energ&iacute;a de disociaci&oacute;n homol&iacute;tica del    enlace O-H y de la reactividad de los radicales formados.<SUP>48</SUP> </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Este estudio genera el primer reporte de actividad    antioxidante en las especies evaluadas de <I>Hibiscus</I> y <I>Jatropha</I>;    los resultados se pueden explicar por la presencia de metabolitos aislados en    estas especies y que han mostrado potencial antioxidante en otras plantas. Dentro    de los metabolitos con esta actividad se encuentran: muc&iacute;lagos, antocianidinas,    amino&aacute;cidos, taninos, flavonoides, quinonas, saponinas, &eacute;steres    de forbol, terpenos, cumarinas, deoxipreussomerinas, iridoides, alcaloides,    carotenos, &aacute;cidos org&aacute;nicos, az&uacute;cares, entre otros.<SUP>49-57</SUP>    </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Los resultados de este estudio muestran que la    mayor actividad frente a <I>E. coli</I> se present&oacute; en los extractos    de Whitten mientras que los de Tainung fueron m&aacute;s activos frente a <I>S.    aureus</I>; este efecto coincide con investigaciones anteriores para especies    de este mismo g&eacute;nero.<SUP>58-61 </SUP>En cuanto a la especie <I>J.</I>    curcas su capacidad para inhibir el crecimiento bacteriano fue baja para <I>E.    coli</I> y casi nula para <I>S. aureus</I>.<B> </B>A pesar de que para plantas    pertenecientes a estos mismos g&eacute;neros se ha reportado actividad antibacterial    frente a estos 2 microrganismos,<SUP>60,61</SUP> los extractos obtenidos de    las especies seleccionadas en este estudio no mostraron una potente inhibici&oacute;n    de crecimiento microbiano. Eso est&aacute; relacionado con el reporte de que    frente a estos 2 microorganismos <I>Jatropha</I> no ha mostrado una alta actividad    y para las variedades de <I>H. cannabinus</I> no se ha evidenciado inhibici&oacute;n    de crecimiento bacteriano de ninguno de los extractos.<SUP>62</SUP> </font>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Con este estudio se observ&oacute; que al utilizar    el m&eacute;todo de microondas, los extractos vegetales obtenidos con CH<SUB>2</SUB>Cl<SUB>2</SUB>    de <I>J. curcas, </I>Tainung, Everglades, presentaron actividad antimicrobiana    frente a <I>E. coli</I>;<I> </I>al parecer porque esta bacteria es susceptible    a los compuestos de los extractos que se potencializan por este m&eacute;todo    de extracci&oacute;n. Adem&aacute;s, se mostr&oacute; que el extracto de <I>J.    curcas</I> obtenido con EtOH por el m&eacute;todo de <I>Soxhlet</I> result&oacute;    mayor para <I>E. coli</I> con respecto a <I>S. aureus</I>; por el contrario,    el extracto de esta misma especie pero obtenido con CH<SUB>2</SUB>Cl<SUB>2</SUB>    por el m&eacute;todo de microondas, inhibi&oacute; el crecimiento para <I>E.    coli</I> pero no el de <I>S. aureus</I>. Estos resultados confirman reportes    previos, los cuales explican que la eficacia de los extractos para inhibir el    crecimiento bacteriano var&iacute;a seg&uacute;n los procedimientos de extracci&oacute;n    y los m&eacute;todos f&iacute;sicos de los ensayos utilizados en cada investigaci&oacute;n.<SUP>63,64</SUP>    </font>     <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Adicionalmente, se ha estudiado que tanto las    hojas como las ra&iacute;ces de <I>J. curcas</I>, poseen actividad antimicrobiana    debido a la presencia de compuestos como fenoles (&aacute;cido g&aacute;lico    y pirogalol), saponinas y flavonoides, que inhiben el crecimiento de bacterias    pat&oacute;genas como <I>E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus y E. faecales</I>.<SUP>65,66</SUP>    Sin embargo, en este estudio se present&oacute; un porcentaje de inhibici&oacute;n    mayor para la bacteria gramnegativa frente a la grampositiva, lo cual puede    indicar que los compuestos como los fenoles, da&ntilde;an la pared celular y    desnaturalizan las prote&iacute;nas; as&iacute; mismo, los compuestos extra&iacute;dos    con alcoholes, afectan la organizaci&oacute;n de las bicapas lip&iacute;dicas    ocasionando muerte celular;<SUP>67</SUP> mientras que la bacteria grampositiva    quiz&aacute; no se ve afectada debido a una menor presencia de l&iacute;pidos.    </font>      <P><font face="Verdana" size="2">Este trabajo es una primera contribuci&oacute;n    al estudio de plantas de la Orinoqu&iacute;a colombiana y propicia el desarrollo    de futuras investigaciones que permitan obtener sustancias naturales para aplicaci&oacute;n    en la industria alimenaria, cosm&eacute;tica y farmac&eacute;utica. Los resultados    de actividad antioxidante se presentan como un primer reporte para estas especies,    que abre as&iacute; nuevas posibilidades de investigaci&oacute;n para el aislamiento    de sustancias antioxidantes; adem&aacute;s, el m&eacute;todo autobiogr&aacute;fico    utilizado en este estudio se puede considerar como una herramienta &uacute;til,    sencilla, r&aacute;pida y econ&oacute;mica, que permite el fraccionamiento biodirigido    de extractos, como una primera aproximaci&oacute;n en la b&uacute;squeda de    compuestos antioxidantes a partir de productos naturales.
