El trabajo tuvo como objetivo caracterizar la respuesta agronómica de 70 nuevos cultivares de caña de azúcar (Saccharum spp.) introducidos en etapa clonal de selección y período inicial de la zafra azucarera en el Ingenio Ofelina de la Compañía Azucarera La Estrella S.A (CALESA), de la República de Panamá. Se evaluaron los caracteres Brix refractométrico, número de tallos m-1, t caña ha-1, incidencia agentes nocivos, floración, grosor y altura del tallo. Se empleó un diseño de Bloques al azar con tres repeticiones. Se realizaron análisis de varianzas de efectos aleatorios para estimar los componentes genético y ambiental, fijos y para establecer las diferencias entre cultivares. Con los individuos seleccionados se realizó un análisis de conglomerados. Se comprobó la diferencia entre los grupos formados con otro análisis de varianzas de efectos fijos y la prueba de Tukey. También se estimaron heredabilidad, Coeficiente Genético de Variación (CGV) y error estándar para cada variable evaluada. Se demostró que la varianza genética fue superior a la del error, excepto en el diámetro, lo que ratifica la importancia del componente genético en esta etapa de selección. El CGV fue mayor para las variables del rendimiento agrícola en la selección de 2011 y en la de 2010, el Brix resultó comparable a la altura y superior al diámetro. Resultaron seleccionados 38 nuevos cultivares que fueron recomendados para la etapa final de selección.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Efficient production in the sugar industry requires the use of cultivars with high sucrose content. The objective of the work was to characterize the agronomic response of 70 new sugarcane cultivars (Saccharum spp.) introduced in the clonal stage of selection and initial period of the sugar harvest in the Ofelina sugarmill (La Estrella SA, CALESA, Republic of Panama). The characters evaluated were the refractometric brix, number of stems m-1, t cane ha-1, incidence of harmful agents, flowering, thickness and height of the stem. A randomized block design with three repetitions was used. Analysis of random effect variances was performed to estimate the genetic and environmental components, fixed and to establish the differences among cultivars. With the individuals selected, a cluster analysis was performed. The difference among the groups formed was verified with another analysis of variances of fixed effects and the Tukey test. Inheritance, Genetic Coefficient of Variation (CGV) and standard error for each variable evaluated were also estimated. It was shown that the genetic variance was greater than that of the error, except in the diameter, which confirms the importance of the genetic component at this stage of selection. The CGV was higher for agricultural performance variables in the 2011 and 2010 selection, the Brix was comparable to the height and higher than the diameter. It were selected 38 new cultivars that were recommended for the final stage of selection.]]></p></abstract>
