A completely random design was used, analyzing six times the samples of mulberry variety YU 62 forage meal with Medicago sativa (lucerne) as control. An in vitro simulation of digestive process in anatomical segments of stomach, duodenal and caecal gastrointestinal tract of rabbit was made. In stomach phase, high calcium content in mulberry raised the pH. In the duodenal phase, a lower pH with a suitable acid-base balance was obtained, which produced an increase in digestibility of crude protein (P &lt;0.0001) in mulberry forage meal with value of 54.92% vs 36.4% respectively of lucerne control. In the caecal phase, in mulberry meal, digestibility of dry matter was higher than the values found in lucerne influenced by the higher digestibility for NDF. This is due to its high content of hemicellulose in the cecum and has a favorable effect on the activity of the caecal microbiota that coincides with the increase of short-chain fatty acid mainly acetic and butyric with significant difference (P &lt;0.0001) with lucerne. In addition, it should be noted that increasing short chain fatty acids lowers pH, tending to neutrality. It is suggested that mulberry forage meal variety YU 62 has a positive in vitro nutritive value, so that it could be used instead of lucerne as an alternative raw material in the formulation of diets for rabbit feeding.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar el valor nutritivo y la fermentación cecal in vitro en la harina de forraje de morera variedad YU 62 para conejos. Se utilizó un diseño completamente aleatorizado en el que se analizó por sextuplicado las muestras de harina de forraje de morera variedad YU 62 y Medicago sativa (alfalfa) como control. Se efectuó la simulación in vitro del proceso digestivo en los segmentos anatómicos del tracto gastrointestinal estomacal, duodenal y cecal del conejo. En la fase estomacal el alto tenor en calcio de la morera elevó el pH. En la fase duodenal se obtuvo un menor pH con un equilibrio ácido básico adecuado que produjo un incremento de la digestibilidad (P&lt;0.0001) de proteína bruta de la harina de forraje de morera con valores de 54.92 % vs. 36.4 % con respecto al control con alfalfa. En la fase cecal, con la harina de morera, la digestibilidad de materia seca fue mayor que los valores encontrados en la alfalfa, influenciados por una mayor digestibilidad de fibra detergente neutra. Esto se debe a su alto contenido de hemicelulosa en el ciego y tiene un efecto favorable en la actividad de la microbiota del ciego que coincide con un incremento producción de ácidos grasos de cadena corta, principalmente el acético y el butírico, con diferencias significativas (P &lt;0.0001) con la alfalfa. Además, se debe señalar que el aumento de los ácidos grasos de cadena corta disminuye el pH, con una tendencia a la neutralidad. Se sugiere que la harina de forraje de morera variedad YU 62 posee un valor nutritivo in vitro adecuado por lo que se podría utilizar, en vez de la alfalfa, como una materia prima alternativa para la formulación de dietas para conejos.]]></p></abstract>
