The objective of this research was to characterize the edaphic mesofauna in five grassland agroecosystems of Granma province, Cuba. To this end, contrasting agroecosystems were selected in terms of soil type, grassland and productive purpose (&#8220;Estación de Pastos&#8221;, &#8220;Ojo de agua&#8221;, "El Triángulo", "El Progreso" and "Cupeycito"). The pitfall traps were used, with a 0.003 % detergent solution. The individuals were extracted and counted and placed in vials, with 70 % ethanol, for later identification. Individuals belonging to two classes, four orders, six families and seven genera were found. The Collembola order was the best represented with five genera. Only in the third sampling there was a significant influence of the season detected on some of the studied variables, specifically for each agroecosystem. The Shannon index showed values lower than 1.35; while the dominance indexes showed values close to or higher than 0.5 in most cases. It is concluded that the richness and abundance of the edaphic mesofauna in the studied grassland agroecosystems was low and very variable in both climatic periods. Individuals belonging to the trophic categories of predators and detritivores were found which showed a variable relative abundance, in each agroecosystem and sampling performed; except in the &#8220;Estación de Pastos&#8221; where there was a predominance of predators.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN La mesofauna edáfica realiza funciones esenciales en el suelo tales como el reciclaje de nutrientes y formación de su microestructura. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue caracterizar la mesofauna edáfica en cinco agroecosistemas de pastizales de la provincia de Granma, Cuba. Para ello se seleccionaron agroecosistemas contrastantes en cuanto a tipo de suelo, pastizales y propósito productivo (&#8220;Estación de Pastos&#8221;, &#8220;Ojo de agua&#8221;, &#8220;El Triángulo&#8221;, &#8220;El Progreso&#8221; y &#8220;Cupeycito&#8221;). Se utilizaron las trampas de caída o &#8220;pitfall&#8221;, con una solución de detergente al 0.003%. Se extrajeron y contaron los individuos y se colocaron en viales, con etanol al 70%, para su posterior identificación. Se encontraron individuos pertenecientes a dos clases, cuatro órdenes, seis familias y siete géneros. El orden Collembola fue el mejor representado con cinco géneros. Solo en el tercer muestreo se detectó influencia significativa de la época en algunas de las variables estudiadas, de forma específica para cada agroecosistema. El índice de Shannon exhibió valores inferiores a 1.35; mientras que los índices de dominancia mostraron valores cercanos o superiores a 0.5 en la mayoría de los casos. Se concluye que la riqueza y abundancia de la mesofauna edáfica en los agroesistemas de pastizales estudiados fue baja y muy variable en ambos períodos climáticos. Se encontraron individuos pertenecientes a las categorías tróficas de depredadores y detritívoros, los cuales mostraron abundancia relativa variable, en cada agroecosistema y muestreo realizado; excepto en la &#8220;Estación de Pastos&#8221; donde existió predominio de los depredadores.]]></p></abstract>
