Given its importance, the article examines the ethnic history of the Nakhchivan region of Azerbaijan from early times to the present. Conducted studies show that Nakhchivan was historically an integral part of Azerbaijan. In the territory of Nakhchivan there are numerous settlements belonging to the Stone Age; among them the settlements of Gazma and Kultepa stand out. Starting from the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC, the territory of Nakhchivan was one of the regions inhabited by Turkic-speaking tribes. In ancient times, the Nakhch, Gerger, Cimmerian, Scythian, Sak tribes, and in the early Middle Ages the Huns, Sabirs, Pechenegs, Khazars and Oghuz Turks migrated to all territories of Azerbaijan, including Nakhchivan, and settled there. All of these have preserved their existence in the place names and hydronyms that currently exist in the Nakhchivan territories.
</abstract>
