La mayoría de los estudios hasta la actualidad están enfocados en la presencia, niveles y efectos en el medio marino, con una atención aún muy incipiente en la atmósfera. En el presente trabajo se estudiaron muestras de deposiciones atmosféricas totales en dos estaciones de monitoreo (una rural y una urbana) en Cienfuegos (Cuba) durante el 2021 con el objetivo de identificar la presencia y determinar los flujos de partículas de microplásticos. Las muestras de deposiciones atmosféricas fueron tomadas mensualmente, y las partículas de microplásticos fueron aisladas mediante separación por densidad y cuantificadas de forma visual empleando un estereoscopio. Los flujos promedio de microplásticos estuvieron en el rango 17.4-77.7 partículas/m2día (promedio de 39.9 partículas/m2día) y 32.1-172.8 partículas/m2día (promedio de 79.7 partículas/m2día) en la estación rural y urbana, respectivamente. Los flujos mostraron un comportamiento temporal similar en ambas estaciones, y una fuerte correlación con las lluvias. Los mayores flujos se observaron durante el período lluvioso y los menores en el período poco lluvioso. Los valores obtenidos se encontraron dentro del rango de variación encontrado en estudios en otras regiones del mundo, aunque en promedio resultaron inferiores. Los resultados de este estudio reportan por primera vez la presencia de partículas de microplásticos en deposiciones atmosférica en el Caribe, contribuyendo de esta forma a ampliar los conocimientos sobre la abundancia de microplásticos en la atmósfera a nivel global.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Microplastic pollution is an emerging concern worldwide. Most studies to date have focused on the presence, levels and effects in the marine environment, but attention to the atmosphere is still limited. In this study, total atmospheric deposition samples were collected at two monitoring sites (rural and urban) in Cienfuegos (Cuba) during 2021, with the objective of identifying the presence and determining fluxes of microplastic particles. Atmospheric deposition samples were collected monthly, and microplastic particles were isolated by density separation and quantified visually using a stereoscope. The average fluxes of microplastic particles were in the range of 17.4-77.7 particles/m2day (average 39.9 particles/m2day) and 32.1-172.8 particles/m2day (average 79.7 particles/m2day) at the rural and urban sites, respectively. The fluxes showed similar temporal pattern at both stations, and a strong correlation with rainfall. The highest fluxes were observed during the rainy period and the lowest during the low rainfall. The values obtained were within the range found in studies in other regions of the world, although on average they were lower. The results of this study report by first time the presence of microplastic particles in atmospheric depositions in the Caribbean, thus contributing to expand the knowledge on the abundance of microplastics in the atmosphere at a global level.]]></p></abstract>
