Tiene una impresionante gama de usos medicinales con alto valor nutricional.  Objetivo.  Evaluar la actividad antimicrobiana &#8220;in vitro&#8221; de extractos acuoso e hidroalcohólico de Moringa oleifera Lam. cultivada en Cuba.  Métodos:  Utilizando el método del MTT, se evaluó la citotoxicidad y la actividad antiviral in vitro de diferentes concentraciones de los extractos de las hojas secas de Moringa oleifera contra los virus del Herpes Simple tipo 1 (HSV-1) y Herpes Simple tipo (HSV-2). Se determinó mediante el método de micro dilución, la actividad antimicrobiana frente a cepas bacterianas de referencias y de asilamientos clínicos y se calculó la concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI).  Resultados:  El extracto hidroalcohólico mostró toxicidad a partir de la concentración de 125 &#956;g/ml mientras que el extracto acuoso no fue tóxico a partir de 500 &#956;g/ml en las células Vero en el rango de las concentraciones evaluadas. Ninguno de los extractos inhibió la replicación &#8220;in vitro&#8221; de los virus HSV 1 y HSV 2 en células Vero, pero mostraron una potente actividad frente a las cepas bacterianas y levadura ensayadas en diversos grados.  Conclusiones:  Los extractos no presentaron actividad antiviral &#8220;in vitro&#8221; frente a HSV 1 y HSV 2, en células Vero, pero si potente actividad antibacteriana, lo que sugiere que las hojas de Moringa oleifera podrían ser un buen candidato en la búsqueda de nuevos agentes antibacterianos a partir de productos naturales contra diferentes patógenos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Background: Moringa oleifera (Moringaceae) is a highly praised plant that has spread in many tropical and subtropical countries. It has an impressive variety of medicinal uses with a high medicinal value.  Aim: . To evaluate the in vitro anti-microbial activity of aqueous and hydro-alcoholic extracts of Moringa oleifera Lam. cultivated in Cuba.  Methods: The MTT method was used to evaluate in vitro cytotoxicity and antiviral activity of different concentrations of the extracts from dry leaves of Moringa oleifera against Type 1 Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1), and type 2 Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-2). The determinations were made by microdilution, antimicrobial activity against the reference bacterial strains, and clinical isolates, then the minimum inhibitory concentration was calculated (MIC).  Results:  The hydroalcoholic extract showed toxicity at the 125 &#956;g/ml concentration, whereas the aqueous extract stopped being toxic at 500 &#956;g/ml in the Vero cells within the range of the concentrations evaluated. None of the extracts inhibited the in vitro replication of the HSV-1 and HSV-2 viruses, but they showed a powerful activity against the bacterial strains and yeast assayed at different levels.  Conclusions:  The extracts did not show in vitro antiviral activity against HSV-1 and HSV-2 in Vero cells, whereas the antibacterial activity was strong, suggesting that the leaves of Moringa oleifera might be a good candidate for an antibacterial agent from natural products against the different pathogens.]]></p></abstract>
