Summary: A study is conducted to determine the degree of knowledge, utilization and sexual responsability of the male adolescent in connection with contraception in our environment. A survey was applied in an anonymous and voluntary wat to 400 male adolescent students from the middle educational level in April, 1996. The extreme ages were 13 and 18, with a mean of 16. A high percentage of male adolescents knowing about the contraceptive methods (82 %) was found; however, only 8 % used some kind of protection during the first sexual relation, and 26 % use them at present, which shows a dissociation between knowledge and the use of contraceptives in the male adolescent. The groups of couples were the main source of knowledge on contraceptive methods, whereas the condon was the most known method. The main reason given by them not to use the condon is the reduction of sensations during intercourse. There is a machista trend as regards the male adolescent’s sexual behaviour, since they do not recognize their responsability concerning contraception (61 %), and they consider themselves with the right to have an unprotected sexual relation with their partners.
Subject headings: CONTRACEPTION/utilization; SEX BAHAVIOUR; SEX EDUCATION; HEALTH SURVEYS.
