Existen pruebas de que dicha afección actúa de manera negativa en la salud bucal.  Objetivo:  Describir las manifestaciones de la diabetes mellitus en la salud bucal.  Desarrollo:  Se considera que la salud bucal forma parte de la salud general, puesto que se relaciona con características sociales vinculadas con la epidemia de enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles, entre ellas la diabetes mellitus. Los artículos examinados muestran el vínculo que existe entre esta afección y diferentes trastornos bucodentales, tales como la enfermedad periodontal, las caries y los problemas en la mucosa bucal. Se observó que los autores consultados presentaron opiniones contradictorias con relación a otras afecciones bucales.  Conclusiones:  Se ha comprobado que la diabetes mellitus tiene manifestaciones en la salud bucal de los pacientes. Existen muestras de su relación bidireccional con la enfermedad periodontal; sin embargo, aunque algunos estudios revelan correspondencia con otras afecciones bucales, no hay suficientes pruebas para corroborarlo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction:  One out of 10 adults in the world presents diabetes mellitus. There is evidence that this affection acts in a negative way in the buccal health.  Objective:  To describe the diabetes mellitus manifestations in the buccal health.  Development:  It is considered that the buccal health is part of the general health, since it is related to social characteristics linked with the epidemic of non communicable chronic diseases, among them the diabetes mellitus. The examined works show the link that exists between this affection and different buccaldental disorders, such as the periodontal disease, cavity and problems in the buccal mucosa. It was observed that the consulted authors presented contradictory opinions related to other buccal affections.  Conclusions:  It has been confirmed that diabetes mellitus has manifestations in the buccal health of patients. There are samples of its bidirectional relationship with the periodontal disease; however, although some studies reveal correspondence with other buccal affections, the evidence to corroborate it are not enough.]]></p></abstract>
