Existen micronutrientes que se relacionan con las enfermedades cardiovasculares, entre los que se encuentran el cobre y el zinc . En el mecanismo fisiopatológico de la hipertensión está presente el estrés oxidativo. Entre las principales funciones del zinc están la de antioxidante y antiinflamatorio.  Objetivo:  Evaluar el comportamiento de las concentraciones séricas de zinc en niños normotensos, prehipertensos e hipertensos, según sexo y color de la piel.  Métodos: estudio descriptivo transversal que incluyó 478 niños entre las edades de 8 y 11 años los cuales se clasificaron según su sexo y color de la piel. Para la obtención del diagnóstico, se utilizaron las tablas de percentiles de talla y presión arterial que consideran la edad y el sexo. La determinación del zinc se realizó en un espectrofotómetro de absorción atómica. Se utilizó el test de Mann-Whitney, para un nivel de significación p&#706; 0,05. Todos los test utilizados pertenecen al paquete estadístico de SPSS 21.0.  Resultados:  Se encontró una tendencia a la disminución de la concentración de zinc en los niños prehipertensos e hipertensos en todos los grupos estudiados. La disminución de la concentración del zinc fue más significativa solo en los niños prehipertensos y en el sexo femenino, al compararlos con los normotensos.  Conclusiones:  En los niños prehipertensos se encontraron las mayores disminuciones de la concentración de zinc.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction:  high blood pressure in childhood is a public health problem worldwide. Micronutrients such as zinc and copper are related to cardiovascular diseases. Oxidative stress is present in the pathophysiological mechanism of hypertension. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties are among the main functions of zinc.  Objective:  to evaluate the manifestation of serum zinc concentrations according to gender and skin color in normotensive, pre-hypertensive and hypertensive children.  Methods:  a cross-sectional descriptive study included 478 children aged 8 - 11 years old who were classified according to gender and skin color. Height and blood pressure percentile tables considering age and gender were used to obtain the diagnosis. The determination of zinc was carried out in an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The Mann-Whitney test was used, for a significance level of p&#706; 0.05. All the used tests belong to the SPSS 21.0 statistical package.  Results:  a tendency to decrease zinc concentration was found in pre-hypertensive and hypertensive children in all studied groups. The decrease in zinc concentration was more significant only in pre-hypertensive children and in females when comparing them with the normotensive ones.  Conclusions:  the greatest decreases in zinc concentration were found in pre-hypertensive children.]]></p></abstract>
