La mortalidad por cáncer ha aumentado sostenidamente en los últimos 25 años a nivel mundial. Su incidencia y mortalidad aumentan con la edad, lo que, asociado al envejecimiento poblacional incrementará la demanda de recursos humanos y materiales, con aumento de los costos asociados a diagnóstico, tratamiento, seguimiento y rehabilitación de los pacientes. Esta enfermedad tiene origen genético por mutaciones somáticas en genes específicos; se considera que son necesarias entre 5 y 10 mutaciones secuenciales para originar una célula maligna. El conocimiento de los mecanismos moleculares de esta enfermedad permite el desarrollo de enfoques terapéuticos específicos, como algunos cambios en el estilo de vida para la prevención de la enfermedad, y el desarrollo de nuevos medicamentos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Cancer is a health problem with a significant economic and human impact. Cancer mortality has been increasing constantly over the last 25 years all over the world. Its incidence and mortality go up with age, therefore our population ageing will boost financial costs related to diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Cancer is caused by specific gene somatic mutations; it is considered that between 5 and 10 sequential mutations are necessary to produce a malignant cell. Knowledge of cancer molecular mechanisms allows the implementation of specific therapeutic procedures, like some lifestyle changes that could prevent the disease, as well as the development of new medications.]]></p></abstract>
