Se describen las características estructurales y funcionales que permiten a las células &#946; de los islotes de Langerhans responder a los cambios de la glucemia con la secreción correspondiente de insulina. Se citan los secretagogos responsables de su secreción y se explica la secuencia de secreción de insulina estimulada por la glucosa, que es el principal. Se describen las características estructurales y funcionales de los islotes de Langerhans y las células &#946; que les permite controlar la glucemia. Se explican los mecanismos moleculares de la toxicidad a las células &#946;, producida por la hiperglucemia prolongada. Se explica la hipoglucemia originada por algunos fármacos y el alcohol.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Insulin is the main anabolic hormone; molecular mechanisms that regulate its synthesis and secretion were reviewed. The structural and functional features that allow the response of Langerhans islets &#946; cells to glycemia changes, with the corresponding insulin secretion, were described. Secretagogues responsible for its secretion are mentioned and the sequence of glucose stimulated insulin secretion, which is the main one, is explained. Langerhans islets and &#946; cells structural and functional features, that allow glycemia control, are described. The molecular mechanisms of the toxic effect on &#946; cells, caused by prolonged hyperglycemia, are explained. Hypoglycemia triggered by some drugs and alcohol is explained.]]></p></abstract>
