Las lep tospiras se eliminan al medio ambiente por la orina de mamíferos infectados y el ser humano puede contraer la enferme dad al entrar en contacto directo o indi recto con la orina o los tejidos de estos animales. Su efecto nocivo sobre los genitales internos ha sido poco tratado por los investigadores.  Objetivo: identificar las serovariedades de leptospiras que mayor daño pueden ocasionar a los genitales internos de las ratas Wistar gestadas.  Métodos: se realizó un estudio experimental en ratas Wistar gestadas: siete grupos con tres animales cada uno: un control negativo y seis casos con dosis de una concentración bacteriana de 300 millones de Leptospiras por mL; se inocularon dos mililitros a cada animal al cuarto día de gestadas por 17 meses. Se tomaron los genitales internos de todas las ratas el día 20 de la gestación, estos fueron procesados en parafina y teñidos con hematoxilina/eosina y observados mediante microscopia óptica de campo brillante.  Resultados:  se observaron las alteraciones en útero, ovarios y trompas; el mayor número de lesiones se presentaron en útero mientras que en ovarios y trompas se visualizaron la misma cantidad de lesiones. La L. Hebdomadis fue la que mayor daño ocasionó en los ovarios mientras que en trompas la L. Canícola fue la serovariedad más agresiva y en útero la L. Australis. Los quistes ováricos se visualizaron en el 36,11 % de la muestra.  Conclusiones:  la leptospirosis infecta los genitales internos pues causa diversas lesiones, con prevalecimiento de las alteraciones congestivas y hemorrágicas. Cada órgano de los genitales internos fue mayormente afectado por serovariedades diferentes. La L. Hebdomadis afectó todos los órganos genitales]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Introduction: leptospirosis is zoonoses of worldwide distribution caused by Leptospiras genus of bacteria. The leptospiras are eliminated into the environment through the urine of infected mammals and humans can be infected through direct or indirect contact with the urine or tissues of these animals. Its harmful effect on the internal genitalia has been little addressed by researches.  Objective:  to identify the serovarieties of leptospiras causing most injuries to the internal genitalia of pregnant Wistar rats.  Methods:  an experimental study in pregnant Wistar rats was conducted, seven groups with three animals each; a negative control and six cases with doses having a bacterial concentration of 300 millions of Leptospiras per mL; two milliliters were inoculated to each animal at fourth day of gestation per 17 months. Internal genitalia of all rats at 20 days of gestation were taken, processing them into paraffin and stained with hematoxylin-eosin and observed by bright-field light microscopy.  Results:  alterations in the uterus, ovaries and uterine tubes were observed; the uterus presented the greatest injuries while in the ovaries and uterine tubes the same quantity of lesions was visualized. L. Hebdomadis caused the greatest injuries in the ovaries while L. Canicola in the uterine tubes; it was the most aggressive serovariety and L. Australis in the uterus. Ovarian cysts were visualized in the 36,11 % of the sample.  Conclusions: leptospirosis infects the internal genitalia because it provokes a diverse number of injuries, congestive and hemorrhagic alterations prevailed. Each organ of the internal genitalia was greatly affected by the different serovarieties. L. Hebdomadis affected every part of genital organs.]]></p></abstract>
