Trace elements that can be present in high concentrations in these soils are food toxics and their negative effects on health are manifested in the long term. The increase in cancer cases, nervous system injuries and genetic diseases is reported, because of the consumption of water and food contaminated with toxic elements. Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence is an analytical method that has demonstrated high efficiency and adequate detection limits. That non-destructive nuclear technique allows multi-element analysis of large volumes of samples at a low cost. Therefore, the scientific group FITOPLANT of UNAH studies agro ecosystems affected by environmental pollution in the municipality of San José de las Lajas. It proposes to evaluate pollution conditionality in agricultural land that receives industrial waste. The analysis revealed that the soil is classified as moderately contaminated in Cr, Co, Zn and Pb and it needs urgent remediation due to the content of Ni and Cu.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN La comunidad científica reconoce la importancia del suelo como recurso esencial y la necesidad de establecer indicadores que mejoren su productividad con la protección, además, del ambiente, la salud humana y la inocuidad alimentaria. Elementos traza que pueden presentarse en concentraciones elevadas en estos suelos son tóxicos alimentarios y sus efectos negativos sobre la salud se manifiestan a largo plazo. Se reporta el incremento de casos de cáncer, lesiones del sistema nervioso y enfermedades genéticas, como resultado del consumo de aguas y alimentos contaminados con elementos tóxicos. La Fluorescencia de Rayos X Dispersiva en Energía es un método analítico que ha demostrado gran eficacia y adecuados límites de detección. Es una técnica nuclear no destructiva, que permite el análisis multielemental de grandes volúmenes de muestras, a un bajo costo. Por ello el Grupo científico FITOPLANT de la UNAH estudia agroecosistemas afectados por la contaminación ambiental en el municipio San José de las Lajas y propone: evaluar las condicionales de contaminación presentes en suelos con uso agrícola que reciben desechos industriales. El análisis reveló que el suelo se clasifica como medianamente contaminado en Cr, Co, Zn y Pb y con necesidad de remediación urgente debido al contenido de Ni y Cu.]]></p></abstract>
