Objetivo: fundamentar los elementos teóricos relacionados con el origen y evolución de la enseñanza de la Histología, así como sus tendencias en el contexto educativo moderno.  Métodos: se realizó una revisión bibliográfica a través de las bases de datos SciELO, MEDLINE, y el motor de búsqueda Google académico. Las palabras claves utilizadas fueron: enseñanza de la Histología, tendencias en la enseñanza de la Histología, historia de la Histología. Se recuperaron 50 publicaciones, fueron seleccionadas 24 ajustadas a la temática y el objetivo propuesto.  Desarrollo: se delimitaron tres núcleos temáticos: el origen de la Histología e inicio de su enseñanza, evolución en Cuba y el mundo, hasta llegar a las tendencias actuales en la enseñanza de esta ciencia, incluyendo metodologías y recursos tecnológicos utilizados en el contexto educativo contemporáneo. Además, los autores emitieron criterios acerca de las posibilidades de aplicación de la microscopía virtual, la clase invertida y el aprendizaje basado en problemas en la educación médica superior cubana.  Conclusiones: la enseñanza de la Histología en la educación médica superior ha evolucionado desde modelos centrados en el profesor con la ayuda de la microscopía óptica, hasta las tendencias pedagógicas actuales, centradas en el estudiante y favorecidas por las nuevas tecnologías de la informática y las comunicaciones.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction:  Histology has not always had the place it occupies today in the curricula of the medical career; its teaching has been modified over the decades to adapt to the needs of the graduate's profile.  Objective:  to establish the theoretical elements related to the origin and evolution of Histology teaching, as well as its trends in the modern educational context.  Methods:  a bibliographic review was carried out through the SciELO and MEDLINE databases and the academic Google search engine. The keywords used were Histology teaching, trends in Histology teaching, history of Histology. Fifty publications were retrieved, 24 of which were selected according to the subject matter and the proposed objective.  Development:  three thematic nuclei were delimited: the origin of Histology and the beginning of its teaching, evolution in Cuba and the world, up to current trends in the teaching of this science, including methodologies and technological resources used in the contemporary educational context. In addition, the authors issued criteria about the application possibilities of virtual microscopy, inverted class and problem-based learning in Cuban higher medical education.  Conclusions:  Histology teaching in higher medical education has evolved from teacher-centered models with the help of optical microscopy, to current pedagogical tendencies, student-centered and favored by new information and communication technologies.]]></p></abstract>
