The physical and chemical composition of the ingredient was calculated using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation was applied to demonstrate the association degree among indicators. Apparent fecal retention of nutrients was studied by total excreta collection method. Crude protein was moderate, while ether extract and fiber fractionation contents were high. The analysis of physical properties showed low solubility and greater buffering capacity against acids with respect to bases (0.61 vs 0.24 meq). There was a high correlation between chemical and physical characteristics (greater than 85 %). Apparent fecal retention of neutral detergent fiber showed a reduction from 10 % inclusion of palm kernel meal in the ration, while control and 5 % did not differ among treatments. Regarding ether extract, the highest coefficient was reached with 5 %, and the lowest with 15 % (88.04 and 83.38 %, respectively) (P&lt;0.05). It is concluded that palm kernel meal has adequate nutritional value for feeding broilers.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Para determinar el valor nutritivo de la harina de frutos de Roystonea regia (palmiche) en la alimentación de pollos de ceba se desarrolló un experimento con 40 animales machos, distribuidos en cuatro tratamientos según diseño completamente aleatorizado: control (maíz-pasta de soya) e inclusión de 5, 10 y 15 % de harina de palmiche. Se calculó la composición fisicoquímica del ingrediente mediante estadística descriptiva y se aplicó correlación de Pearson para conocer el grado de asociación entre los indicadores. Se estudió la retención fecal aparente de nutrientes por el método de colecta total de excretas. La proteína bruta fue moderada, en tanto que el extracto etéreo y los tenores del fraccionamiento fibroso resultaron elevados. El análisis de las propiedades físicas evidenció baja solubilidad y mayor capacidad amortiguadora ante los ácidos con respecto a las bases (0.61 vs 0.24 meq). Hubo alta correlación entre las características químicas y físicas (mayor de 85 %). La retención fecal aparente de la fibra detergente neutro mostró reducción a partir de 10 % de inclusión de harina de palmiche en la ración, mientras que el control y 5 % no difirieron entre tratamientos. En relación con el extracto etéreo, con 5 % se alcanzó el mayor coeficiente, y con 15 % el menor (88.04 y 83.38 %, respectivamente) (P&lt; 0.05). Se concluye que la harina de palmiche posee valor nutricional adecuado para su uso en la alimentación de pollos de ceba.]]></p></abstract>
