Se presenta una revisión bibliográfica sobre la epidemiología, fisiopatología molecular, clínica y tratamiento de esta enfermedad. Se realizó una búsqueda sistemática en investigaciones científicas disponibles en artículos de revistas de alto impacto, regionales, proyectos científicos y ensayos clínicos. La característica fenotípica más relevante es el enanismo causado por resistencia a la hormona de crecimiento y concentraciones bajas o nulas del factor de crecimiento insulínico-1(IGF-1) acompañados de defectos óseos, metabólicos y gonadales. En total se han encontrado más de 60 mutaciones y una en particular E180 encontrada en la población ecuatoriana donde existe una alta prevalencia de esta enfermedad y se le atribuye un menor riesgo a generar diabetes; varios estudios crearon teorías muy interesantes con respecto a una baja predisposición de desarrollar cáncer en pacientes tipo Laron donde existen estudios que refuerzan dicha teoría, pero en cuanto a la resistencia a generar diabetes existen casos y estudios que discrepan. Los resultados de diversos estudios invitan a generar mayor investigación con respecto a la genética de esta enfermedad y sus efectos metabólicos desencadenados.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Laron syndrome is a rare genetic disease that has attracted great interest due to its phenotypic characteristics. A bibliographic review on the epidemiology, molecular and clinical pathophysiology and treatment of this disease is presented. A systematic search was conducted on available scientific research in high-impact, regional journal articles, scientific projects, and clinical trials. The most relevant phenotypic characteristic is dwarfism caused by resistance to growth hormone and low or no concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) accompanied by bone, metabolic and gonadal defects. In total, more than 60 mutations have been found and one in particular E180 found in the Ecuadorian population where there is a high prevalence of this disease and a lower risk of generating diabetes is attributed; Several studies created very interesting theories regarding a low predisposition to develop cancer in Laron-type patients, where there are studies that reinforce this theory, but in terms of resistance to generating diabetes, there are cases and studies that disagree. The results of various studies invite further research regarding the genetics of this disease and its triggered metabolic effects.]]></p></abstract>
