Esta investigación se realizó con el objetivo de evaluar el efecto antiparasitario de la administración de ozono gaseoso medicinal antes o en paralelo con la infección de ratones BALB/c con Plasmodium berghei ANKA. Los experimentos con este modelo evaluaron el estado redox en sueros de los infectados y de controles sanos, así como las parasitemias, los pesos corporales y las curvas de supervivencia en el curso de la parasitosis, en ratones no tratados y tratados con ozono. La artemisinina a 25 mg/kg se utilizó como referencia. Las concentraciones séricas de indicadores redox de infectados y controles sanos mostraron diferencias significativas (p&lt;0,05) al día 4 postinfección (d4). El pre-tratamiento con 0,3; 1,5 y 2,5 mg/kg de ozono reflejó similitud en los pesos corporales iniciales y al concluir el esquema (p&gt;0,05). Con 2,5 mg/kg de ozono, la parasitemia fue menor al d4 (p&lt;0,05). Se detectó una disminución significativa del peso corporal en controles negativos desde el d7 (p&lt;0,05) que se acentuó al d10 (p&lt;0,05); mientras solamente se registró descenso significativo al d10 en pre-tratados con 0,3 y 1,5 mg/kg de ozono (p&lt;0,05). En correspondencia, las curvas de supervivencia obtenidas con ozono contribuyeron a mayores medianas respecto al control negativo. Contrariamente, el tratamiento con 0,3 y 2,5 mg/kg de ozono posterior a la infección (p.i.) aumentó significativamente la parasitemia al d4 (p&lt;0,05). Se registraron similares pesos corporales iniciales y finales de los animales sometidos al esquema con ozono p.i (p&gt;0,05) y las curvas de supervivencia con ozono mostraron semejanza al grupo control negativo. Esto sugiere que el ozono generó una cantidad insuficiente de sus derivados con efecto antiparasitario inmediato; solamente el ozono antes de la infección manifestó efecto contra esta, por lo que se requiere investigar los mecanismos que intervienen.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Gaseous ozone can manifest germicidal, antioxidant and immune response actions. This research was conducted to evaluate the antiparasitic effect of the administration of medicinal ozone before or in parallel with the infection of BALB/c mice with Plasmodium berghei ANKA. Experiments with this model assessed redox status in sera resulting from infection against healthy controls, as well as parasitemias, body weights and survival curves in the course of infection, in mice not treated and treated with ozone. Artemisinine at 25 mg/kg was used as reference. Infection at d4 showed significant differences (p&lt;0.05) in serum concentrations of redox indicators of infected and healthy controls. Pre-treatment with 0.3; 1.5 and 2.5 mg/kg of ozone reflected similarity in initial body weights and at the end of the scheme (p&gt;0.05). With 2.5 mg/kg of ozone, the parasitemia was lower at d4 (p&lt;0.05). A significant decrease in body weight was detected in negative controls since d7 (p&lt;0.05) which was accentuated at d10 (p&lt;0.05); while only significant decrease at d10 was recorded in pre-treated with 0.3 and 1.5 mg/kg of ozone (p &lt;0.05). Correspondingly, the survival curves obtained with ozone contributed to medians higher than negative control. On the contrary, treatment with 0.3 and 2.5 mg/kg of ozone posterior to infection (p.i) significantly increased parasitaemia at d4 (p &lt;0.05). Comparable initial and final body weights (p&gt; 0.05) of mice in the scheme with ozone p.i were found and the ozone survival curves showed similarity to the negative control. This suggests that ozone generated insufficient amount of derivatives for an immediate antiparasitic effect; only ozone administered before infection manifested an effect against it, so it is necessary to investigate the mechanisms involved.]]></p></abstract>
