The study was undertaken to investigate the effects of policosanol (25 mg/d) in patients with type II hyperlipoproteinemia as well as its safety and tolerability. This study had a double-blind, randomized, controlled, design with two parallel groups that received policosanol (25 mg/d) or placebo for 12 weeks. The study included patients with type II hyperlipoproteinemia, of both sexes, aged between 25 and 70 years. As a primary efficacy variable, the effects on LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) were evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed according to the Intention to treat method. The study included 63 patients (27 men, 36 women) (average age: 56 years). At the end of treatment, policosanol significantly reduced levels of LDL-C and total cholesterol, as well as increased serum levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), while triglyceride levels although reduced at the end of treatment, this reduction was not significant. The policosanol was safe and well tolerate, not affecting the physical and laboratory parameters investigated. It is concluded that although treatment with Policosanol (25 mg/d) produced beneficial effects on the lipid profile in these patients at 12 weeks, in addition to being safe and well tolerated, it is not justified to indicate this dose, due to obtaining results lower than those obtained with the 20 mg/d dose in a shorter treatment time.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN El policosanol es una mezcla de alcoholes de alto peso molecular purificados a partir de cera de caña de azúcar con efectos reductores del colesterol y efectos pleiotrópicos relevantes, como la inhibición de la agregación plaquetaria y la susceptibilidad de las lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL) a oxidarse. El estudio se realizó para investigar los efectos del policosanol (25 mg / d) en pacientes con hiperlipoproteinemia tipo II, así como su seguridad y tolerabilidad. Este estudio tuvo un diseño doble ciego, aleatorizado y controlado con dos grupos paralelos que recibieron policosanol (25 mg / d) o placebo durante 12 semanas. El estudio incluyó a pacientes con hiperlipoproteinemia tipo II, de ambos sexos, con edades comprendidas entre los 25 y los 70 años. Como variable principal de eficacia, se evaluaron los efectos sobre el colesterol LDL (C-LDL). El análisis estadístico se realizó según el método por intención de tratar. El estudio incluyó a 63 pacientes (27 hombres, 36 mujeres) (edad promedio: 56 años). Al final del tratamiento, el policosanol redujo significativamente los niveles de LDL-C y colesterol total, así como aumentó los niveles séricos de lipoproteína-colesterol de alta densidad (HDL-C), mientras que los niveles de triglicéridos, aunque se redujeron al final del tratamiento, esta reducción no fue significativo. El policosanol fue seguro y bien tolerado, sin afectar los parámetros físicos y de laboratorio investigados. Se concluye que si bien el tratamiento con Policosanol (25 mg / d) produjo efectos beneficiosos sobre el perfil lipídico en estos pacientes a las 12 semanas, además de ser seguro y bien tolerado, no se justifica indicar esta dosis, debido a la obtención de resultados. inferiores a los obtenidos con la dosis de 20 mg / d en un tiempo de tratamiento más corto.]]></p></abstract>
