The drugs used for its treatment produce adverse effects that limit their medical prescription. The mixture of alcohols obtained from beeswax, registered in the form of tablets as Abexol®, exerts gastroprotective effects demonstrated in preclinical and clinical studies. The aim of this work was to compare the effects of the active ingredient-beeswax alcohols (BWA-AI) and its formulations in form of BWA-tablets and BWA-suspension on ethanol- induced gastric ulcer in rats. The animals were distributed in nine groups: a control without damage and eight groups in which the ulcer was induced by ethanol: a positive control (with damage), one with omeprazole-reference substance-(20 mg/kg), and six treated with BWA-AI, BWA-tablets and BWA-suspension, respectively, at doses of 25 and 200 mg/kg. All treatments significantly reduced the ulcer index with respect to the positive control, although BWA-suspension produced the greatest reduction, without differences being observed between them on the content of mucus, malondialdehyde and total proteins in the gastric mucosa. In conclusion, BWA-suspension exerts an effect superior to that of BWA-tablets and BWA-AI, at the same doses, on gastric ulcer induced by ethanol in rats.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN La úlcera péptica es una enfermedad crónica recurrente del tracto gastrointestinal muy común, cuyas principales complicaciones (sangrado, perforación, penetración y obstrucción) afectan la calidad de vida de los pacientes y pueden conducir a la muerte. Los fármacos utilizados para su tratamiento producen efectos adversos que limitan su prescripción médica. La mezcla de alcoholes obtenida a partir de la cera de abejas, registrada en forma de tabletas como Abexol®, ejerce efectos gastroprotectores demostrados en estudios preclínicos y clínicos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue comparar los efectos del ingrediente activo alcoholes de cera de abeja (ACA-IA) y sus formulaciones en forma de tabletas-ACA y suspensión-ACA sobre la úlcera gástrica inducida por etanol en ratas. Los animales se distribuyeron en nueve grupos: un control sin daño y ocho grupos en los que la úlcera fue inducida por etanol: un control positivo (con daño), uno con omeprazol -sustancia de referencia- (20 mg/kg), y seis tratados con ACA-IA, tabletas-ACAy suspensión-ACA, respectivamente, a las dosis de 25y200 mg/kg. Todos los tratamientos redujeron significativamente el índice de úlcera con respecto al control positivo, aunque la suspensión-ACA produjo la mayor reducción, sin observarse diferencias entre ellos en el contenido de mucus, malondialdehído y proteínas totales en la mucosa gástrica. En conclusión, la suspensión-ACA ejerce un efecto superior al de las tabletas-ACA y ACA-IA, a las mismas dosis, sobre la úlcera gástrica inducida por etanol en ratas.]]></p></abstract>
