La Bahía de Nuevitas presenta un moderado nivel de contaminación, debido fundamentalmente a los vertimientos directos de 17 fuentes contaminantes industriales, además de residuales domésticos provenientes de la población. En este trabajo se evaluó la carga contaminante que generan cinco industrias que tributan a la bahía, las cuales representan el 30% de las fuentes contaminantes del municipio. Para el análisis de las aguas residuales se conformaron muestras compuestas en los puntos principales de vertido de cada instalación, incluyendo todas las actividades productivas. Se utilizaron los métodos descritos en el Standard Methods for the Examination of Water. Se demostró que de forma general las instalaciones sobrepasan los límites máximos permisibles para la DQO de acuerdo a los valores descritos en la norma cubana y sólo dos de ellas para el parámetro de DBO5.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Seawater pollution is related to one of the main environmental problems in Cuba. The Nuevita&#8217;s Bay presents a moderate level of pollution, mainly due to direct discharges from 17 industrial pollutant sources as well as domestic waste from the population. In this work, the polluting load generated by five industries that tribute to the bay was evaluated, which represent 30% of the polluting sources in the municipality. For the analysis of wastewater, composite samples were made at the main discharge points of each facility, including all productive activities. The methods described in the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water were used. It was shown that in general the facilities exceed the maximum permissible limits for COD according to the values described in the Cuban standard and only two of them for the BOD5 parameter.]]></p></abstract>
