Son responsables de pérdidas económicas de hasta un billón de dólares a nivel mundial y representan uno de los problemas más graves en la producción ovina extensiva, particularmente en los trópicos.  Objetivo. Recopilar la información relacionada con las principales actividades biológicas de los extractos de hojas del árbol del A. indica (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) para evaluar su posible uso futuro como tratamiento clínico en el control de nematodos gastrointestinales en ovinos.  Desarrollo: Debido a los problemas productivos y económicos que implica la parasitosis gastrointestinal en los animales, donde la resistencia antihelmíntica es causada por el mal manejo de los antihelmínticos a niveles aceptables para desarrollar un potencial productivo del ganado, actualmente se están buscando métodos alternativos para el control de los nematodos gastrointestinales capaces de reducir de manera eficaz las cargas parasitarias. El atributo de los métodos alternativos de control es reducir la dependencia con respecto a los antihelmínticos comerciales, lo que significa menos tratamientos por año al animal, lo que permite preservar parásitos susceptibles en la misma granja. El uso de plantas con propiedades antihelmínticas se ha convertido en una de las alternativas de mayor interés en los últimos años. El árbol del A. indica, es una de estas plantas con actividad antiparasitaria.  Conclusiones: Los extractos de hojas del árbol del A. indica (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) constituyen una fuente alternativa ecológica a evaluar como tratamiento clínico para el control de nematodos gastrointestinales en ovinos por su efecto antihelmíntico y ayudan a promover la biodiversidad. En comparación con los antihelmínticos químicos muestran menor posibilidad de desarrollar resistencia y demuestran que son seguros, económicos y fáciles, disponible en los alrededores y serán útiles para agricultores o ganaderos. Los extractos de esta planta podrían integrarse en un programa de métodos de control integrado diseñado para lograr un control parasitario sostenible en los sistemas de producción ovina y además emplearse en estudios contra los parásitos del filo platelminto, de mayor prevalencia epidemiológica.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background: Nematodes are gastrointestinal parasites that infect ovines. They can cause economic losses leading to the most serious problems in extensive ovine production, particularly in tropical areas of up to a billion dollars worldwide.  Aim. To collect information about the main biological activities of A. indica (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) tree leaf extracts to evaluate their possible use in the future as a clinical treatment to control gastrointestinal nematodes in ovines.  Development: The productive and economic problems caused by gastrointestinal parasitosis in animals, where anthelmintic resistance results from failure to use anthelmintics at adequate levels for proper livestock productive potential. Hence, alternative methods to control gastrointestinal nematodes capable of reducing the parasitic burdens are being studied presently. The attribute of alternative methods is to reduce the dependence on commercial anthelmintics, which means fewer treatments to animals a year, thus permitting the preservation of susceptible parasites on the farm. The utilization of farms with anthelmintic properties has become one of the most interesting alternatives recently. The A. indica tree is one of the plants that has antiparasitic activity.  Conclusions: A. indica (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) tree leaf extracts constitute an alternative ecological source to control gastrointestinal nematodes in ovines, due to their anthelmintic effect and the promotion of biodiversity. Compared to chemical anthelmintics, they have a lower chance of developing resistance, demonstrating safety, cost-effectiveness, and ease of use, since they are present in the environment, and are useful to farmers. The plant extracts might integrate into a program for a comprehensive control method designed to control parasites sustainably in ovine production systems. They could also be part of studies on phylum plathelminth parasites, with a broader epidemiological prevalence.]]></p></abstract>
