Enfermedad que causa pérdidas económicas al disminuir la producción lechera y deteriorar su calidad.  Objetivo:  Este trabajo tiene como objetivo brindar información actualizada acerca de esta patología y de las nuevas estrategias que se proponen para su prevención y control.  Desarrollo: Se revisó bibliografía actualizada sobre la mastitis, su etiología, diagnóstico, factores que favorecen su presentación, importancia del cumplimiento de la rutina de ordeño para su prevención y las nuevas alternativas que se estudian para su control. Esta enfermedad tiene un origen infeccioso y no infeccioso, destacándose su etiología bacteriana. Presenta un curso clínico y subclínico. La mala calidad del agua, las lactancias largas y el estrés constituyen factores de riesgo para su presentación. La correcta ejecución de la rutina de ordeño y la higiene adecuada juegan un importante rol en su prevención. Actualmente se estudian nuevos productos naturales para su control como los extractos vegetales y el propóleo.  Conclusiones:  La mastitis es una enfermedad que afecta frecuentemente a los rebaños lecheros ocasionando pérdidas económicas. La implementación de buenas prácticas y el mantenimiento de adecuadas condiciones higiénicas durante el ordeño son esenciales para su prevención. Actualmente se realizan numerosas investigaciones encaminadas a la búsqueda de nuevas alternativas sustentables y ecológicas para lograr su control, entre las que se destacan la propuesta del uso de extractos vegetales y otros productos con propiedades antimicrobianas como los probióticos y el propóleo en la antisepsia final del pezón.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background: Mastitis often affects dairy herds, causing economic losses due to a reduction of dairy yields and milk quality.  Aim. To provide updated information about this pathology, and the new strategies suggested for its prevention and control.  Development: The study consisted of a thorough review of the current literature on mastitis, its etiology, diagnostic, factors that favor its occurrence, significance of proper milking routines for prevention, as well as the new alternatives suggested for control. Mastitis may have infectious and non-infectious causes, though bacteria have a significant role. Besides, it has a clinical and subclinical course. Poor water quality, prolonged lactation, and stress constitute risk factors for its occurrence. Proper implementation of milking routines and hygiene play an essential role in its prevention. Today, researchers are studying new natural products for its control, such as plant extracts and propolis.  Conclusions:  Mastitis frequently affects dairy herds, causing huge economic losses. The implementation of good practices and proper hygiene when milking, are essential for the prevention of the disease. Presently, various research studies focus on the search for new sustainable and ecological alternatives to control the disease, including the utilization of plant extracts and other products with anti-microbial properties, such as probiotics and propolis to treat final nipple antisepsis.]]></p></abstract>
